(Jer. 31:7-14; Ps. 84; Eph. 1:3-6, 15-19a; Luke 2:41-52)

Cuando yo fui muy pequeña – posiblemente tenía cuatro o cinco años – mi familia quería pan una mañana. Y yo fui en una aventura. I once went on an adventure for bread when I was about 4 or 5 years old. You see in England, the milk truck used to have not just milk, which was replaced outside of your door according to the number of glass bottles you left out – but also bread. Y mi familia quería pan, del tipo que vendió el hombre que manejaba el pequeño camión de la leche. One morning I woke early and realized that we had missed the milkman and that we hadn’t been able to ask for bread as we had hoped, so I ran off in the direction I knew the milk truck to take, blocks and blocks from my home. My parents noticed and got a bit worried. Eventualmente, después de alrededor de 20 minutos, regresé a nuestra casa, y feliz con mi pan. J

Esto dio un gran susto a mis padres así que aprendí que no debía salir sin ellos en las calles. Pero también me ensenó que yo pude hacer mucho más que lo que pensaba. This experience taught me not to freak out my parents by running off unexpectedly, but also that I could do much more than I thought I could!

Over our short road trip to the Bay Area and back this past week, Alene and I have been listening to a book in the recent young adult fiction series by Phillip Pullman called The Book of Dust: The Beau Savage. Este libro para los jóvenes adultos se trata de una fantasía en que dos adolescentes tienen que enfrentar las condiciones peligrosos de un gran diluvio mientras llevan una bebe en su pequeña barca de un peligro en Oxford, Inglaterra hasta su padre en Londres.  The story is about two adolescents caring for a baby in an apocalyptic style flood scenario, fleeing a dangerous man in Oxford and navigating on a small boat to get the child to safety in London. Estos jóvenes son muy valientes en la faz de muchos peligros. They are so brave in the face of many dangers. But when they arrive, someone asks “what they were playing at.” El adulto no puede creer que los adolescentes fueron pensando bien y así que el los pregunta que juego estúpido fue esto, llevar una niña en un diluvio a ellos. And in reply, the slightly older girl defends the boy who helped guide them to safety, describing how incredibly brave he was in combatting many dangers. La joven describe lo valiente que fue el joven; que ni lo creyeran los obstáculos que han enfrentado.

The youth of today face many obstacles we didn’t even imagine when we were growing up. Los jóvenes de hoy están expuestos a diferentes obstáculos a los que ni tuvimos acceso mi generación y las generaciones antes de mí. The book Under Pressure by Lisa Damour describes how in particular many girls feel more stressed at this time than at any point in previous history. Ahora, con sus horarios llenos, y con la presión que sienten para sacar buenas notas y el acceso continuo a la media, nuestros adolescentes sienten mucha presión.
Our youth are capable of so much, but we must see how we can help them navigate these new waters. Nuestros jóvenes son capaces pero necesitan nuestra ayuda para navegar estas aguas.

In the scripture from today, we have a rare glimpse at the adolescent Jesus. En el evangelio de hoy, miramos al Jesus adolescente.  But we have to remember that Jesus was already very capable in his own right. Aunque era adolescente Jesús no jugaba con su fe. El realmente interaccionaba con los adultos en el templo. Jesus was not “playing at” faith but was genuinely engaged in the temple. He had real conversations with the religious leaders.  This is a good reminder that children and youth are not the future of the church, they are the current church. En esto nos recuerda esta escritura que los jóvenes no son el futuro de nuestra iglesia, son la iglesia actual. Yes, they need support, and we may at times feel anxious when they spread their wings, but they are also capable of so much. Necesitan apoyo, y a veces nosotros vamos a sentir ansiosos en ayudarlos, pero también son muy capaces.

I have seen this in the relatively young team helping Jade in her new ministry at Our Redeemer. At the Posadas, Jade was not on her own, but her talented family helped with music and the ushers and altar servers, as well as those who helped with the fellowship time were all former youth from All Santos’ youth group. Aunque yo tengo poco que ver con su éxito, me sentí mucho orgullo en ver a Jade y a su equipo de líderes jóvenes, apoyado por su talentosa familia, guiar a toda la misa el día de las Posadas. We also see this in Karla’s taking on leadership of our youth ministry. Siento también muy emocionada porque otra joven adulta que viene de nuestro grupo de jóvenes, Karla, ahora va a servir como directora de los jóvenes, preparada por Jade. In our Quinceañera service, we read from another part of Jeremiah – the call of Jeremiah, wherein he complains that he cannot serve as he is too young. And God responds: “Do not say, ‘I am only a boy’; for you shall go to all to whom I send you, and you shall speak whatever I command you. Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you to deliver you, says the LORD (Jer 1:7b-8).’” NO dice que solo soy un niño, dice Dios, porque Dios lo va a mandar y lo va a poner las palabras en su boca.

In the Ephesians reading we hear about our inheritance in the faith. Todos tenemos la herencia con los santos de nuestra fe. Y esta fe nos empodera a todos para seguir a Dios. All of us, including our youth, take on that inheritance. And this faith empowers us all to be strong in God, to take on leadership when needed. Si somos jóvenes o adultos, esta fe es lo que nos da el poder de ser líderes.  But in order to lead well, our youth need our help to do it well. Nuestra juventud necesita nuestro apoyo para crecer en su liderazgo.

How are we as a church this year growing strong in faith ourselves so we can have conversations with Jesus in the Temple? In English, the Wednesday service will be trying out the first Good Book Club class this Wednesday at 5pm and discussing the gospel of John. En español, vamos a platicar un domingo este mes y el próximo mes sobre el evangelio de Juan ocupando el estudio del evangelio de San Juan.

And how are we supporting our youth and children? Y ¿cómo estamos apoyando a nuestros jóvenes y a nuestros niños? Cindy Morales has been doing some excellent work in Sunday school in preparing some children for their “grand” or “first communion” wherein they take communion after having learned more about its significance and after learning prayers and more about the church. En la escuela dominical Cindy Morales ha estado preparando a algunos niños para su “primera” o “gran comunión” en febrero. We are aiming for the Feast of the Presentation in early February. But today we also celebrate the work Jade Ortiz has done with the youth and look for ways to uplift Karla’s work with them in the weeks and months to come. Hoy día celebramos a Jade y a todo el trabajo que hizo con nuestros jóvenes en los nueve años en completo (de 16 años en total en ministerio a jóvenes) que ha estado sirviendo en Todos los Santos. Y buscamos maneras de apoyar a Karla López en su nueva posición como directora de jóvenes.
Let us empower our youth for leadership and let us adults build our relationship with God this year by reading God’s word so we can deepen in understanding of God’s will for all of us and truly live into our fullness. Para que nos capacitemos bien a nosotros los adultos y a nuestros jóvenes para servir a Cristo, que empoderamos a nuestros jóvenes y que leemos las sagradas escrituras para tener una relación mejor con nuestro Dios.

Lord knows, we need our youth now, as we try to face climate change, and as we try to bring more love and less violence in our world, in the face of escalations in the Middle East and anti-Jewish violence here in the US. Necesitamos la ayuda de nuestra juventud más que siempre, mientras enfrentamos a la violencia en el medio este y aquí en los ataques en contra de los judíos, y en los efectos del cambio climático. Pero con Dios, todo es posible. With God, all is possible, if we use all possible means, including the wisdom of the young. Amen.
