Nochebuena/Christmas Eve 2020 (Year B) + 12.24.20

The first thing I have to share tonight is that our dog tried to eat Christmas! ¡Nuestra perra trataba de comer la Navidad! Well, not literally, but let me tell you. One night early in Advent I left the Advent Wreath on the dining table, along with our butter dish with butter on it. And on the Advent Wreath was perched the smallest nativity, made out of a large enameled nut shell from Latin America. Yo dejé un plato que contenía mantequilla en mi mesa por error al lado de mi corona de adviento que también tenía un pequeño nacimiento de América Latina hecho de una cascara pintada. I got up in the morning and it was a disaster. The dog had carefully coaxed the butter dish onto the chair and licked almost a whole stick of butter up. Not so bad, really, as long as her system could handle it. La perra había comido toda la mantequilla muy cuidadosamente, no quebrando el plato de mantequilla. Pero también la corona de adviento estaba en el piso, ¡y el nacimiento había desaparecido! But the advent wreath was also on the floor. The flameless candles were chewed, and the small nativity had disappeared! Into the dog’s belly.

Many nights later, after I made the mistake of rubbing down an olive wood camel Alene and I brought back from the Holy Land, and she tried to chew him up too! It really seemed like she had something against Christmas. ¿Que tenía ella en contra de la Navidad?

I am of course being silly. Por supuesto estoy siendo un poco ridículo con esto.

But these events kept coming back to me as I prepared what I might say about Christmas this year. Because at every turn, it felt to me that the Pandemic was trying to eat Christmas this year, too. Pensé en esto mucho mientras preparaba mi sermón de Nochebuena porque pareció que la pandemia también quería comer a nuestra Navidad. We needed to stop worshipping in person for our safety, but I thought, okay we can celebrate online. So I started decorating and getting into the mood and then I heard about ICUs filling up and the sad news of deaths in our diocese and in the extended family/friends of our congregation. Me acostumbre a tener misas en línea a lo menos para ahora para nuestra seguridad, y empecé a decorar en casa un poco. Pero luego mire que estaban llenando los cuidados intensivos y escuche de muertes en nuestra diócesis y en algunos familiares lejanos/amigos de nuestra congregación. Even when we do see people outside of our household, we cannot embrace them as we would like to. Aun cuando vemos los que no son de nuestra casa, no los podemos abrazar como queremos. It can feel like Christmas has been lost this year. Puede sentir como nos perdemos la Navidad este año. Is it possible that the darkness has won?

But good news folks, we didn’t! No perdemos la Navidad. The darkness has not won. No ha vencido la oscuridad. We are here to raise a joyful noise and to connect to as many of our siblings in Christ as we can today to say Merry Christmas! La buena noticia es que la pandemia no nos puede robar la Navidad. Nosotros estamos juntos en línea hoy para decir ¡Feliz Navidad!

We are here to proclaim Jesus’ birth. Estamos aquí para proclamar el nacimiento de Jesús.

It may help to remember that all was not hunky-dory in the times of Mary, Joseph and Jesus either. Mary and Joseph were forced to travel while she was pregnant on a donkey to be counted so that they could be taxed. María y José fueron forzados a viajar mientras ella estaba encinta, y montados en un burro, para que pudieran estar cobrados impuestos. But in the midst of this, a light shone! Jesus came. En el medio de esto, de este momento triste y difícil, vino Jesús, el niño Dios. ¡Brilló una luz en la oscuridad!

But they didn’t know all that would happen yet. They knew part of the story, but as we will see in the weeks to come they didn’t know all of it. The wise men would come, and that would tell them part of it. Then the presentation would happen in the temple and Simeon and Anna would tell them another piece of the story. Slowly but surely the truth of Jesus would become evident. María y José no sabían todo lo que iba a pasar en el momento del nacimiento. Ellos sabían parte de la historia, gracias a los ángeles, pero veremos en las semanas por venir que ellos no sabían todo todavía. Vendrán los reyes magos o los hombres sabios, y ellos dirían parte de la historia, y luego en la presentación del templo escucharían más de San Simeón y de Ana. Y poco a poco verían la luz de Cristo, y toda la historia.

We are a bit like that. Today we celebrate all of the light of Christ, but we are a bit in the darkness, too. We still wait for the vaccine, for a return to normalcy, and for the ultimate return of Christ. Estamos en la luz de la Navidad, pero estamos en la oscuridad también, mientras esperamos la vacuna, un regreso a la normalidad y al regreso de Cristo.
But in this way we are blessed. Because we can imagine a bit better, how in the midst of the hopelessness of the situation of Mary and Joseph, a light shone, and that light shone for the whole world. En nuestra oscuridad este año tenemos el don de saber un poquito de lo que sintieron María  y José, quienes en su desesperación, tenían en este niño una razón para esperar. Y esta luz brilló para todo el mundo. Our Savior. Nuestro Redentor.

So as you hear the words of the story of our salvation again today, let hope be born in you anew. Even if it is tentative, even if you are just peering into the distance, to see the far light of dawn. Mientras escuchas la historia de nuestra salvación de nuevo hoy, dejes que la esperanza se nace de nuevo en ti. Aun si sientes tentativo, aun si estas mirando al alba en la distancia. Feliz Navidad.
