Sabbatical Journal 7 : The Face of God / La Cara de Dios 7.12.19

In the Bible, God tells Moses that one cannot see the face of God and live. And yet those thousands of years later, Jesus showed up and there was something about him- about his face that was both human and divine, that allowed the face of God to be visible to people. Yet there was surely something about Jesus that blinded people a bit. He was always knocking folks sideways. People met him and just knew he was the real thing. Paul Badde's book, The Face of God, and the shorter The Holy Veil of Manoppello outline how he found out about a small veil over an altar in a far off part of Italy- tucked into a tiny town in the Abruzzi mountains, that beguiled him and many others. While many faithful people (including Padre Pío) believed that the veil was perhaps our most precious "relic" of the church, others were put off by the claim that several had made that this was indeed a true image of Christ's face made at the moment of resurrection. The day before yesterday Alene, Genesis and I arrived during a stormy afternoon to the small town of Manoppello in Italy. We had gotten lost in the rainstorm and a hotel employee named Emmanuele (!) came to our rescue and brought us to the hotel. Alene and I had to go sneak a peek at the veil over the altar, the source of our pilgrimage. But a mass was beginning and Alene would shortly have class online. During her class I felt called back to the church, and as it was literally next door to the hotel (which is at the old pilgrim hostel) I just walked over. I saw a couple praying the rosary with a nun just a couple of rows in front of me. I took in the glowing, almost cream and bronze image of Jesus' face and it just felt real. I began to cry. I didn't want to leave Genesis too long so I returned to the hotel and we headed back to pray before the holy face before dinner. It was then that, seeing the same couple and the nun sitting together, I became convinced that it was no other than Paul Badde, his wife Ellen and one of the nuns he mentions in his book, Sister Pietra Maria. We googled them and, with internet certainty based courage, we went over and thanked Badde for his book that had brought us across the sea and even (for Alene) braving driving in Italy to this small town with such a treasure. He added to the kindness by suggesting Sister Pietra Maria personally show us the veil after the 7:15 am mass the next morning. So yesterday morning we arose bright and early and went to mass. We were told we were welcome to receive. And then we went up the stairs and the kind sister showed us all the aspects of the veil. In each light it shows a slightly different face. In one light one eye appears smaller and with the pupil smaller as if the light is entering it. The other eye's pupil is bigger, as if one eye is out of focus. The skin is whole but shows healed wounds. Without light the image disappears - but here is an amazing thing- the sister mentioned how Jesus told us we must become like little children. She pointed out that when you kneel the image is restored and once again Jesus' face appears, if anything sweeter than before. Sister PM continued to explain many details about the type of fabric, upon which it is impossible to paint. Interestingly, the cloth would originally have been a golden bronze-brown. A theory is that at the moment of resurrection, this valuable cloth had been placed over Jesus' face on top of the shroud of Turin and the cloth of Ovieto which had captured the blood from his lungs and at the moment of resurrection a blinding light had bleached the image of the face upon the cloth. Much like a photograph. There are many details to this which I will not do justice in telling but the amazing thing is that when the face from the Shroud of Turin, the Cloth of Ovieto and the Veil of Manoppello are super-imposed, they are the same face! But somehow just reading about this or telling it doesn't do it justice either. We must share the good news of the love and acceptance, mercy and joy we have learned from seeing Jesus' face, whether in the Volto Santo or elsewhere. We must share that with the world. We left gobsmacked and grateful, and I picked up a graphic novel and an image of the veil for church as a reminder of this amazing encounter. I close with some words by Alene:
Manoppello

Transparent as the veil
My thoughts refuse to hold still
Those eyes implanted on my mind
Draw me, aching, into bruised heart

The scars of death—
How could they heal so quickly?
Transformed by light
My own wounds seem so small

Here is where I want to stay
Held by love’s resurrected gaze
I understand why no one could obey
The great command to mystery.

Me puse a llorar.
Manoppello

Transparent as the veil / Transparente como el velo
My thoughts refuse to hold still / Mis pensamientos no quietan
Those eyes implanted on my mind / Aquellos ojos impresionados en mi mente
Draw me, aching, into bruised heart / me atraen, dolorido, hacia un corazón abatido

How could they heal so quickly? / ¿Cómo pudieran sanar tan rápidamente?
Transformed by light / Transformados por la luz
