Is there no balm in Gilead?
Is there no physician there?

Why then has the health of my poor people
not been restored?

¿No habrá algún remedio en Galaad? ¿No habrá allí nadie que lo cure? ¿Por qué no puede sanar mi pueblo?

Posiblemente esto estaba corriendo por la mente de aquel sacerdote en Dolores, México hace tantos años en el 16 de septiembre. Is it possible words such as these from Jeremiah were running through Father Costilla’s head as he rang the historic bell in Mexico and made the cry on behalf of the people, what is known as the “Grito de Dolores”, to announce Mexico’s intention to be independent from Spain on September 16, 1810?

El veía que la gente estaba sufriendo bajo España y necesitaba su independencia. He saw how the people suffered and sought their freedom.

I think it is interesting that Fiestas Patrias, which also includes Central American independence celebrations, falls so near this year to the death of Queen Elizabeth II. Muchos de nosotros estamos tristes por la muerte de la Reina Isabel. Yo, siendo nacida en Inglaterra, lo sentio mucho su muerte. Even as it was expected, all British people were affected, even if they may have different points of view on the monarchy. Muchos en Inglaterra tienen dudas sobre la monarquía, pero todavía sienten afectados por la muerte de la Reina Isabel.

And yet, it is true that while we can be saddened by Queen Elizabeth’s death, yet we are also aware of the effects of colonialism. Cuando ascendió al trono, no era mucho antes que se decía que el sol no bajaba en el imperio británico. A common statement around the turn of the 20th century was that the sun did not set on the British empire- so vast was the extent of the British dominions. In the queen’s lifetime and before, the tide of empire was turning and more and more peoples were either gaining full independence (like India) or negotiating a respectful relationship of more coequal or even independent leadership (like Canada). Some places found something in between, feeling that they benefited economically from being part of the greater British territories, such as Bermuda. Así que antes que y durante su tiempo de estar en poder, Reina Isabel ha visto muchos cambios. Territorios sobre los cuales ella tenia poder como monarca en el inicio de su tiempo de servicio ahora no están bajo el poder de Gran Bretaña, o han negociado una relación más independiente.

Thus, there have been many declarations about whether other territories will cut loose now King Charles III is in charge. Ahora muchos se han preguntado si ahora con la ascensión al trono de Rey Carlos III, si otros países o territorios se van a distanciar de Gran Bretaña. And there has been scrutiny of their finances. Y la gente tiene preguntas buenas sobre sus finanzas.

Many have talked about whether we can mourn someone who at least for a while represented ruling over other people, especially with the racial-relations implications. Muchos se han preguntado si es bueno estar en tanto dolor sobre una monarca que representaba el poder de gente blanca sobre gente de color.

I think it is true that you can separate the person from the institution and admire how she tried to navigate a very complex role and lived out her faith. Pienso que se puede separar la persona de la institución y admirar como navegaba un papel muy complejo y cómo vivió su fe.

But I think that is not even the most interesting question. Esto no es la cuestión más importante para mí.

For those in Mexico, independence from Spain could be gained politically or externally, but not bodily or internally. Independencia de España fue ganado en México políticamente pero no en el cuerpo.

What I mean to say is that centuries of colonization had blended indigenous, Spanish and some other groups such as other Europeans and those of the African Diaspora and parts of Asia, into a new people. Tenían una nueva gente mexicana que era indígena, español, y también una mezcla de otros partes como de África, Asia y otros partes de Europa.

No es tan diferente aquí. It is not so different here. I feel it in a very literal way, being a British born American via my mother. Yo lo siento literalmente en mi cuerpo, siendo británica de nacimiento y estadounidense por mi madre. I, Iike many of us, am a mix of many things. And not one of them is pure or without reason to repent. But my heritage has moments that make me proud also. Como muchos, soy una mezcla, y hay partes de mis raíces de que tengo que arrepentir. Y hay partes que me dan orgullo.

And today, we celebrate the baptisms of Isaac and Grace! Their baptisms remind us of who we are in baptism too- we are in our bodies but we are also of God. En nuestro bautismo, recordamos que somos en nuestros cuerpos pero también somos de Dios. How do we navigate both the world and the heavenly? ¿Como nos encontramos entre tierra y cielo? How do we reconcile the fact that we live in broken systems? ¿Como reconciliamos los sistemas complejos en las que vivimos? I think a clue is to be found in the gospel for today. Encontramos vistazo de esto en el evangelio de hoy.

“And I tell you, make friends for yourselves by means of dishonest wealth so that when it is gone, they may welcome you into the eternal homes.”

“Les aconsejo que usen las falsas riquezas de este mundo para ganarse amigos, para que cuando las riquezas se acaben, haya quien los reciba a ustedes en las viviendas eternas.”

This always seemed baffling to me. Doesn’t it sound like the opposite of what Christians should do? ¿No debemos ser honestos como cristianos, en finanzas tanto como en otras cosas?

Yes. We should be honest. But Jesus is reminding us that we live in a world in which we can easily be bound to wealth. Vivimos en un mundo en que fácilmente podemos ser siervos a las riquezas en vez de a Dios. And so, if we are willing to play a bit, and interact with those who work differently with the powers that be, then we can also negotiate our internal sense of self and stay rooted in God even as we deal with the realities of the workaday world. Si jugamos un poco, no de manera ilegal pero solo en que trabajamos con personas que conocen del mundo de finanzas, podemos vivir en este mundo y todavía mantener nuestra obediencia a Dios.

Note that the worker here sells goods at a big discount but does actually maintain relationship with this boss. El trabajador aquí vende los bienes a un gran descuento, pero mantiene su relación con su jefe.

How can we be similarly creative with the world so that we stay connected to God? ¿Como Podemos ser así de creativos en el mundo mientras tratamos de mantener nuestra conexión con Dios? Thinking of our baptism, how can we claim the freedom that we have in Christ that is outside of the world? ¿Como recordamos la Libertad que tenemos en nuestro bautismo, siendo de Dios y de ningún reino de este mundo?

So, I challenge you, as you celebrate today, seek independence within. ¡Buscan la independencia no solo fuera, pero también interior hoy!
