God, give me a blessing! Dios, ¡dame una bendición!

Blessed to be a blessing. ¿Somos bendecidos para bendecir a los demás?

Estos dos pensamientos pueden afectar nuestras vidas. ¿Existimos para recibir bendiciones o para compartirlas? These two thoughts- asking God for blessings and cherishing what has been given so it can be shared with others are two different philosophies that can affect the way you live.

To bless or be blessed? Bendecir o ser bendecido. Of course, we all want both. But which way do we lean? Todos queremos ambas ser bendiciones y ser bendecido, pero ¿cuál es nuestro enfoque?

One common complaint about the church as an institution is that it exists largely to support itself. Un criticismo sobre la iglesia como institución es que existe solamente para apoyarse a si mismo.

To that I answer, yes! Si lo hacemos. It is certainly true that we seek to maintain the church. Si es cierto que buscamos mantener la iglesia.

But the real question is -why does the church focus on its own survival? It is to receive blessings or is it to bless? La pregunta clave es que si la iglesia se mantiene para su propia sobrevivencia solo para recibir bendiciones o si es para bendecir.

Back in the day, as now, “I’m blessed” was usually code for “God has blessed me with money and or people.” En los tiempos antiguos “yo soy bendecida” usualmente significaba que Dios le había bendecido a alguien con dinero y/o familia. Today we can feel a bit “not blessed” if the coffers or the bank accounts are lower or if the family is smaller or the pews emptier. A veces hoy en día, como en el tiempo de Jesús, sentimos una carencia de bendiciones cuando no hay mucha gente o no hay mucho dinero.
Here in Matthew, Jesus turns that all on its head. He foolishly or wisely says that those who are blessed are those who are poor in spirit, mourn, thirst for righteousness, who seek peace and are persecuted. These are not the obviously blessed people in the world, but Jesus is going to them and saying- You are Blessed! Because you don’t already have all you need- there is space for God to bless you. And the blessing is guaranteed but you have to want it, to need it.
Son dichosos, dice Jesús, no porque han recibido bendiciones, pero porque les han carecido de bendiciones. En su manera que parece tonta, pero es llena de sabiduría, él dice- si han sido perseguidos o han tenido que buscar la paz; si han tenido hambre o han estado en dolor de perder a alguien, ¡están dichosos! Porque Dios puede darles su bendición. Su bendición es garantizada, pero para recibirlo, tienen que necesitarlo. You have to need the blessing. Tienen que necesitarlo.

So, we have to stay hungry, in a way. To seek the blessing by seeking not perfect stability but a place where God can bless us. But more than that, we seek blessings not to absorb them but to share them. Nos tenemos que mantener un poco hambrientos. Hambrientos para un cambio, no totalmente satisfechos. Así dejamos un espacio para Dios hacer su trabajo y traer su bendición. Pero estas bendiciones buscamos no solo para recibirlos, pero realmente para compartirlos.

I am grateful we are a foolish church. Doy las gracias por nuestra iglesia que es tonta para Cristo. When I find a person experiencing homelessness at our door, I do have to ask them to think of another long-term spot. Si tengo que pedir a la gente que experimenta ser sin hogar buscar otro sitio si están quedando en nuestras puertas. Pero después siempre los invito a la iglesia. A comer. A alabar. A participar en ser una bendición para la comunidad. I invite them to find a new place to stay- to which the other day a fellow asked for my address 😊 – el otro día un tipo me pidió mi dirección cuando le dije que se tuviera que mudar. But afterwards, I invite them. Come to church! Eat! Worship- be blessed and share the blessing.

But we aren’t just a charity organization. We are an icon of God’s love in the world. Somos más que una caridad, pero también mostramos el amor de Dios en el mundo. When we share food, we also share with people that God loves them and cares for their needs. Cuando compartimos algo, si sea comida u otra ayuda, decimos a la gente que son importantes para Dios.
Last Friday we had two participants from the Rescue Mission working at our Food Pantry. They were a big help. They are people who need blessings, badly. But they were blessing others. And at the end they sat and enjoyed a snack. But their purpose there was to be there for others, not to only meet their own needs. What a joy! Que gozo fue ver a dos personas que están quedando en un refugio venir a ayudar en la dispensa el otro viernes. They thanked us but we were thanking them! Ellos nos dieron las gracias por tener un lugar para ir y ser útil, pero ¡nosotros los agradecimos a ellos por ayudar!

My favorite passage is in today’s readings- se lee hoy mi pasaje favorito de las escrituras.  [God} has told you, O mortal, what is good;
and what does the Lord require of you

but to do justice, and to love kindness,
and to walk humbly with your God? (Micah 6:8)!

El Señor ya te ha dicho, oh [persona],

en qué consiste lo bueno

y qué es lo que él espera de ti:

que hagas justicia, que seas fiel y leal

y que obedezcas humildemente a tu Dios. (Miqueas 6:8)

And that’s what we do at All Santos. We may not have a lot of people or lots of resources always at our fingertips, but we receive blessings and we send them back out. To help as we can – not doing everything as we are not God- but doing something- to make the world a bit more just and merciful and kind.
Esto es lo que hacemos en todos los Santos- no tenemos miles de personas ni muchos fondos en nuestra disponibilidad, pero recibimos bendiciones y los mandamos de regreso al mundo. Ayudamos en lo que podemos – no haciendo todo porque no somos Dios. Pero hacemos algo que hace al mundo un poco más justo, un poco más misericordioso y bueno.

We follow a foolish Lord- who saw a ragtag bunch in the wilderness and said – you are blessed! Who began and ended his ministry affirming the blessedness of dwelling amongst the outcast members of society. Seguimos un Señor que nos muestra la sabiduría de Dios en ser un poco ridículo en los ojos del mundo. El empezó y termino su ministerio afirmando que dichosos son los que habitan entre los que parecen carecer de bendición.

At the end of the day, we really aren’t focused just on maintaining the church. We know that God has us. And so we can be fools for Christ. Podemos ser tontos para Cristo, porque realmente no tenemos mantener la iglesia solos, pero Dios está a nuestro lado.

So, we keep on doing it- ministering as we can to others, maintaining this crazy, sometimes sinking ship of faith, not for ourselves, but to be a blessing. Lo seguimos haciendo, manteniendo esta barca en un mar que parece querer hundirlo. Siguiendo adelante en fe, sabiendo que Dios nos está bendiciendo para ser una bendición al mundo. Amen.
