¿Quieren ver a Jesús? Do you want to see Jesus?
Today’s gospel is all about seeing Jesus, experiencing who Jesus is. El evangelio de hoy se trata de ver y experimentar quien es Jesús. Poor Thomas gets a bum rap in this gospel, because we focus on the perception of his doubt. But as some have said, he just wants what everyone else has had around him – to see Jesus, to experience the risen Lord (Working Preacher’s “Sermon Brainwave Podcast” for 4/7/24). No debemos pensar mal de Tomas porque quiere ver a Jesús- todos los demás lo han visto y ¡el solo quiere tener la misma experiencia!

Where have you seen Jesus? ¿Dónde han visto Ustedes a Jesús? I have seen Jesus in many places. Perhaps the most profound experience, when I felt I saw Jesus face to face, was on a hilltop in Manoppello, Italy, seeing the image of a face, not beautiful, but somehow filled with such love. It was an image of the risen Christ, and yet the sister who was there showed me how his face still showed its wounds, and one eye still looked as if it were near death, while the other was bright, open, alive! The parted lips seemed to be speaking the words of this text- Peace be with you! And breathing the breath of the Spirit. This experience made me think that I must always follow this Christ, always hold him close in my heart.
En una colina en Manoppello, Italia, vi una imagen de Jesús que me hizo sentir que realmente lo estaba viendo. Su cara no fue bella, pero, era lleno de tanto amor. Dijeron que fue una imagen del Cristo resucitado, pero la hermana que estaba allí me dijo que pudiera ver todavía en su cara su sufrimiento y muerte, con un ojo que casi pareció muerto y otro muy abierto y vivo. ¡Y su boca parecía estar abierto para decir “Paz a Ustedes!” respirando su aliento que es el Espíritu como describe en este pasaje. Allí sentí que lo tenia que servir para toda mi vida, y nunca olvidar que mi razón de servir en ministerio era él.

Pero también he visto a Jesús en otros lugares y de otras maneras más sutiles. I have also seen Jesús in other, more subtle ways. Of course, I felt the power of walking where he walked in Jerusalem, Bethlehem and the surrounding areas. Por supuesto sentí una conexión especial caminando donde el caminaba en Jerusalén, donde nació en Belén y en las áreas alrededor de allí en la Tierra Santa. I also have felt Jesús’ presence as I walked part of the Camino de Santiago in Spain, feeling that I finally understood what it was to trust the Spirit as I simply followed the arrows towards each day’s destination. Siguiendo las flechas del Camino de Santiago en España, sentí que realmente entendí que fue el hecho de realmente seguir el Espíritu sin tratar de controlar.

But this must seem a travelogue, and I admit I have seen Jesus, too, in this community, in how people care for each other and are truly present in time of need. Aunque parece este una cuenta de mis viajes también quiero decir que he visto a Jesús en esta comunidad y en cómo la gente se cuide el uno al otro. Jesus says that when you have cared for the least of these, you have cared for him. Jesús dice que cuando has cuidado a los más pobres, lo has cuidado a él. Because that indeed is the example of Acts, even if we don’t hold everything in common, we strive to live as if we are interdependent, as if we cannot be happy if one member is not happy. Aunque no tenemos todo en común de la misma manera que en el libro de los Hechos de los Apóstoles, vivimos con una interdependencia, sabiendo que nuestra felicidad y bienestar esta conectada al bienestar común. When one part of the body suffers, we all do until we do what we can to make it better. Cuando alguien está sufriendo entre nosotros, hacemos lo que podemos para ayudar a mejorar la situación.

Ultimately, we are all dependent on God, but we try to serve each other as best we can while we are here, making sure that small things and big things are tended to as we can – an accessible community garden, supporting our youth to have a great experience for their future.
Sabemos que finalmente dependemos de Dios – pero tratamos de servir el uno al otro según lo que podemos, asegurándonos que estamos presentes en diferentes maneras. Por esto tenemos un jardín comunitario que esta accesible a todos, y apoyamos a nuestros jóvenes para tener una experiencia que ayudaría a ellos en su futuro.

This is love of neighbor. This is why Jesus came to us, bid us be unafraid, and share the good news. Esto es el amor al prójimo. Que nos seguimos amando bien. Sabemos que tal vez fallamos a veces porque somos seres humanos, pero tratamos de seguir adelante y recordar que Jesús nos respiro con su aliento, y nos dio su poder y su Espíritu para ser su iglesia, una fuerza del amor en el mundo. Let us continue to love each other well. Will we fail at times? Of course. We are only human. But we can continue and remember that Jesus breathed his Spirit upon our spiritual ancestors the disciples, and gave us his church the strength to be a force for love in the world. This peace and strength continues in our lives today because He is Risen! Esta paz y fuerza siguen presentes en nuestras vidas hoy en día porque ¡Ha Resucitado!

I want to see Jesus. Quiero ver a Jesús. But know this, when you do see Jesus, it will get personal. It may get weird. He may say, feel the wounds in my side! Puede ser una experiencia extraña conocer a Jesús porque tal vez te preguntara si quiere ver sus heridas. But even when weird, Jesús is worth it. And remember, when we care for others, we care for Jesus’ wounds, too. Y recuerden, cuando cuidamos a los demás, cuidamos también a Jesús y sus heridas también. He is worth it. You will see. Verás que vale la pena, aun cuando él se parece extraño. Do you want to see Jesus, too? Y tú, ¿Quieres ver a Jesús, también?
