“Now concerning
spiritual gifts, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be uninformed.”
“Ustedes saben que cuando todavía no eran creyentes se dejaban arrastrar
ciegamente tras los ídolos mudos. Por eso, ahora quiero que sepan que nadie
puede decir: «¡Maldito sea Jesús!», si está hablando por el poder del Espíritu
de Dios. Y tampoco puede decir nadie: «¡Jesús es Señor!», si no está hablando
por el poder del Espíritu Santo (1 Corintios 12: 1-3).”
This message from
St. Paul today reminds me a bit of visiting the youth group in the past few
weeks. Este mensaje de San Pablo me hace recordar de los
varias veces durante los recientes meses que he visitado al grupo de jóvenes,
que también ha servido como preparación para primera comunión para Jaivan, Jose
y Juan.

Paul talks about how God is more important and more powerful than any spiritual
gift an individual might have. Pablo habla así sobre habilidades espirituales porque
han sido algunos en la iglesia de los corintios quienes han decidido que sus
dones espirituales son tan importantes que ellos pueden actuar como más grandes
que los demás. Basically
Paul is responding to a group of the Corinthians who have said, because they
have certain spiritual gifts that they are better than others. San Pablo nos recuerda que todos necesitan ser tratados igual porque
todos tienen dones especiales en la iglesia.[1] Why is this
important? This is important because the
Corinthians had originally worshipped many gods. Y Pablo les quiere recordarles a los corintios que aunque en la tradición
griega habían muchos dioses, ahora como cristianos, ellos creen en solo un Dios, amoroso y fiel.[2] La
unidad es muy importante para nosotros como cristianos.
In clarifying
important aspects about spiritual gifts, Paul is reminding the Corinthians
about what’s important to their tradition, just like Jade has been keeping our
young people up to date on what matters to us as Christians in general and
Episcopalians in specific.
Y los sacramentos, como la Santa Comunión también nos hacen recordar de
lo que es importante en nuestra tradición.
Sacraments,
such as Holy Communion which we lift up today, tell a story also. They remind us that no matter the fad of the
day, we listen to God’s word and we share in God’s table. Nos hacen recordar que realmente, a su base, son la Palabra de Dios y El
Cuerpo y La Sangre espiritual de nuestro Señor Jesucristo lo que son la base de
nuestra tradición. Podemos hablar sobre
varias opiniones o pensamientos teológicos, pero estamos bautizados y venimos a
la iglesia para compartir y aprender. Después
vamos al mundo para traer el reino de Dios un poco más cerca. The basics are that
we are baptized, we come to church to be fed spiritually and then we go out and
try to make the world more like the Kingdom it’s becoming. Tratamos de hacer un mundo a que Jesús le gustaría entrar de nuevo.
We have to prepare
for Jesus coming back. Tenemos que preparar para el regreso del novio de la
iglesia, que es Jesucristo.
Hablando de novios, el evangelio de hoy es bien interesante, ¿No? Jesus is right at
the very beginning of his ministry, and he’s at a wedding. ¿Quién sabe si él está disfrutando de la boda o si está bien aburrido
porque todavía es joven y su mama le ha traído?
Maybe
he’s a bit bored because his mom dragged him along. And to top it off, they run out of
drinks! Para hacerlo peor, ya no tienen vino para beber. Cada uno de Ustedes que ha sido anfitrión
para una fiesta, sabe que esto es lo que pasa en las fiestas, especialmente las
bodas. I don’t know
why, but something always goes slightly awry at weddings. Pero no importa, porque la madre de Jesús, conocido a nosotros como la
Virgen María, sabe que hacer. Ella
sabe que su hijo es bien especial. At
first, Jesus doesn’t want to respond—that’s not my job! But listen up kids, even Jesus listened to
his mother here! And after a bit of
coaxing, Jesus makes his first miraculous sign, turning water into wine. Jesús convierte el agua en vino, su primera señal milagrosa. And it’s important
to note that this is a big symbol—there’s no missing it—this isn’t just one
bottle of the good stuff Jesus brews up.
Pero Jesús hace galones y galones de vino—entre 120-180 galones. About 120-180
gallons of wine, in fact. That’s about
120-180 jugs of milk worth of wine![3] Es impresionante. Porque nuestro
dios es extravagante y su amor es abundante.
And God’s mercy is
abundant also. Recordamos que su misericordia, como su amor, no tiene
fin. Nuestros niños y muchos de nosotros
tomamos santa comunión hoy, pero a veces hay días en que sentimos que no
podemos tomar la santa comunión. Maybe
there will be moments when we feel separate from God and unworthy to take
communion. Pero recuerden que en la confesión de pecado, podremos
traer lo que nos separe del Señor y
dejarlo con él. The
confession that we will do in a couple of moments gives us that space to leave
our sins, the things that take us far from God, with him. Y cuando decimos “lo siento” a Dios, when we
tell God we’re sorry, what does he say?
¿Qué
dice? [Te perdono.] I forgive you. Cada vez nos perdona, y esto es otro
milagro.
For me this is a
miracle as big as or bigger than turning all that water into wine. God takes our sinful lives and accepts us
back again and again. Cada vez de nuevo él nos acepta y nos perdona y nos
invita a la mesa del Señor. We
come back and we take communion once more.
And we feel communion with each other and with God.
Dios nos ha nombrado de nuevo, nos ha reclamado por Él. Somos sus hijos amados.
So, si toman comunión este día por primera vez o si toman cada semana,
recuerden que son bienvenidos. You
are welcome here and it is this Word, this Cup and this Bread that are
important. Sus pecados, sus dones espirituales o su supuesto
falta de don espiritual, ninguna de estos importan. Lo que importan son los brazos abiertos del Señor,
sus ojos que perdonan, y su llamada a venir a la mesa, de compartir las Buenas
Nuevas. So kids,
take and eat, drink this cup and fill yourselves up with Jesus’ joy so that you
can share that joy with the world. And
know that God will always take you back.
