Christmas / Navidad (II) + 12.25.18

« ¡Gloria a Dios en las alturas!

¡Paz en la tierra entre los hombres que gozan de su favor!»

"Glory to God in the highest heaven,
and on earth peace among those whom he favors!"

What was happening in that moment, that glorious moment when a son was being born who would be the Sun to shine in our darkness? ¿Qué estaba pasando en aquel momento cuando nació un niño que iba a ser el Sol para iluminar a nuestra oscuridad?

Un autor y sacerdote, Joaquín Peñalosa describe ese momento como el momento de romper una piñata. Peñalosa, a priest and poet, describes this moment as if it was the breaking open of a piñata by the angels.
To give you a bit of background, I recently learned that the piñata has a lot of symbolism. Traditionally it is a star with seven points to represent the seven cardinal sins. The candy inside represents the riches of heaven – a foretaste if you will, just like communion is also – and the idea is that those who persevere in their faith and trying to live well will beat back the temptation to fall into sin and will attain the joys of heaven.
Aprendí recientemente que en la piñata tradicional, la estrella tenía siete picos, cada uno representando los pecados cardinales, y los dulces adentro fueron una representación de las delicias del cielo – un anticipo de lo que tendremos – justo como es la santa comunión. Y el idea es que los que tratan de vivir bien y como cristianos persistirán y recibirán los gozos del cielo.[1]

This gives me a new understanding of the festive practice. Esto me da un nuevo entendimiento de la práctica festiva.

Así que es lindo escuchar este poema, aquí es una parte, que imagina estas noticias gozosas del nacimiento de Jesús como un quebramiento de una piñata.

 Let me share a bit of this poem with you to see how the piñata broken by the angels is a re-imagination of Jesus’ birth:

La piñata de los ángeles

“Que se rompa la nuez y se rompa la esfera,      [Let the nut crack, let the globe be broken]
que se rompió el anuncio, la realidad empieza.  [The Word is out, reality begins]

Empieza un nuevo día y un nuevo testamento, [A new day begins, and a new testament]
que se rompa la nube y llueva su misterio.        [Let the cloud break and rain its mystery]

Que se rompa el buñuelo en los labios del Niño, [Let the bun break on the baby’s mouth]
que el pandero se rompa y que se rompa el frío. [and the tamborine break into music as the cold breaks, too]

Todo en este minuto un cambio se realiza….” [in this moment all is changed]

In this first part, the announcement of Jesus’ birth, likened to a piñata broken, opens a new reality and a New Covenant. Un nuevo testamento y una nueva realidad empiezan con el nacimiento de Jesús, tan fuerte y gozoso es el momento que parece romper una piñata.

All that was before is made new. Todo lo anterior es hecho de nuevo.

la que compró Miguel en el puesto, tan cara. [the one that Michael bought in the stall, so dear]

Que se suban al techo a colgarla en la reata, [let them go to the roof to hang it on a string]
que venden los ojillos con oscura mascada  [cover the eyes with the dark scarf]

y que preste José, por un rato, su vara;  [and let Joseph lend, for a moment, his staff]
que les den dos, tres vueltas cerca de la piñata  [and give two, three turns around the piñata]

y en un golpe de gritos brinque ya su descarga  [and in a smack of shouts spill out its contents]
de confeti y almendra, de limón y naranja. [of confeti and almond, of lemon and orange]

Que se rompa la nuez, que se rompa la esfera, [let the nut crack, let the globe break]
que se rompió el anuncio, la Navidad empieza.”[2] [the word is out, Christmas has begun]

En el poema Miguel el ángel compra la piñata – como el combate el pecado. Michael buys the piñata here because he is the one who beats back sin.

And Joseph lends his staff – the willingness of a faithful man to support the divine experiment is in evidence here. Y José presta su vara y así él apoya el experimento divino con su fidelidad a María y a su Dios.

And as it breaks and goodies fall out – confetti, almonds, lemons and oranges- traditional treats- we are reminded of the joys of heaven falling all around us as heaven and nature sing – joys that are no less vibrant even if less visible.
Y cuando rompe la piñata, cae el confeti, la almendra, limón y naranja – dulces tradicionales – pero ellos nos hacen recordar de los gozos que están cayendo del cielo – mientras canten los ángeles y los pastores y nosotros también – gozos invisibles pero aún más preciosos.

Love came down at Christmas… To remind us in the bleakness of the world that all truly is made new.

El amor bajo para besar a la tierra y nosotros gozamos – no a pesar de la oscuridad pero porque su luz eventualmente quitará todo el dolor de este mundo.

Let us rejoice in our Savior’s birth!

Que se rompa la nuez, que se rompa la esfera – let the nut crack, let the globe break, the Word is out]
que se rompió el anuncio, ¡la Navidad empieza! Christmas has begun!
