(2 Samuel 11:26–12:13a; Salmo/Ps. 51:1–13; Efesios/Eph. 4:1–16; Juan/John 6:24–35)

St Paul, speaking to the Ephesians in the excerpt we hear today, says: “I therefore, the prisoner in the Lord, beg you to lead a life worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, making every effort to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.”

San Pablo dice: “Sean humildes y amables; tengan paciencia y sopórtense unos a otros con amor; procuren mantener la unidad que proviene del Espíritu Santo, por medio de la paz que une a todos.”

Humbleness- humildad- to me is an important aspect of today’s scriptures. How can we remain humble, even and especially when we feel elevated in the world? ¿Como podemos mantener humildad aun cuando el mundo nos exalte?

In today’s reading from the second book of Samuel, David is humbled greatly. En la lectura de hoy del segundo libro de Samuel, algo pasa que hace que David se tiene que presentar ante el Señor con mas humildad. El profeta Natán nota que él ha transgredido, llevando a Betsabé como su esposa y causando la muerte de su esposo Urías. Nathan points out to him, that just like in the story about the man who stole another man’s little lamb, David has stolen Uriah’s wife and life.

Some will assert that clergy often find themselves in the role of Nathan here, speaking truth to power alongside other people of faith and bidding those in power to amend their ways. But I would contend that just as often, clergy hold power and must be cautious in how they use it, and that all too often our communities, if they are doing their job, keep us honest and humble.

Algunos dirían que los clérigos son como el profeta Natán, y tenemos la oportunidad de decir la verdad delante de los que están en autoridad y hacer que ellos corrigen sus acciones. Y a veces esto es cierto, pero a menudo también nosotros somos los quienes tienen el poder y son nuestras comunidades los quienes nos corrigen y ayudan a mantener nuestra humildad y honestidad.

I had an experience a few months back when a member of the community asked me to meet. They asserted that I had not been there for them at a time when they needed support. I apologized, expressing regret that I had not shown up in the way that they had needed at the time, and thanked them for sharing this truth with me. It truly was a great gift to me to share it. And then I made a plan to deal differently with similar situations in the future. I know I will make mistakes again, unfortunately we are all human. But I will try to do better, with a little help from my friends.

Tuve una experiencia hace un par de meses cuando tuve una platica muy buena con un miembro en la comunidad quien me expresó con mucha honestidad que sentía que yo le había dejado sin apoyo en una situación difícil. Yo dije que lo sentía mucho, y que estaba muy agradecida que me había hablado de su verdad en vez de solo guardar un rencor. Además, hice un plan para hacer algo diferente en el futuro cuando estoy en una situación semejante. Yo sé que, como ser humana, voy a hacer errores en el futuro, pero trataré de mejorar con un poco de ayuda de mis amigos.

But the important thing here is not whether we sin, and hopefully never as egregiously as David did, but just as it is the important thing in this story from Second Samuel, the question is, how do we react when called to do better? David says: “I have sinned against the Lord.” He acknowledges his fault. And that is what any of us must do, if we intend to do better and mend our ways.

Lo más importante aquí no se trata de pecar o no pecar, aunque si Dios quiere no hacemos algo de la gravedad de las acciones de David, pero lo mas importante, como lo es en la situación de David, es como reaccionamos. Como respondemos cuando estamos invitados a cambiar nuestra manera de actuar en el mundo.

Just as David repents, we must also remain open to others’ feedback, even though we must exercise judgment in the Spirit regarding whether feedback is truly for us or if it is about someone else’s issues. But that openness can help us to grow in loving relationship with God and with each other.

Justo como David se arrepiente, nosotros también debemos estar abiertos a la retroalimentación de los demás. Sin embargo, también debemos usar nuestro propio juicio sobre si la información recibido de los demás realmente es para nosotros o si se trata del trabajo que otras personas tienen que hacer.

Because, as I heard about the gospel passage this week, so often people just want physical food, and it is true that we all need it! But Jesus invites us to receive something deeper, something that nourishes Spirit as well as body, and in the same way, if we want to live more deeply, we must be willing to change and adapt and engage with others and what the Spirit is teaching us as we move forward.

Como escuché esta semana sobre este evangelio, muchos solo buscan comida física, y es cierto que esto necesitamos para sobrevivir. Pero Jesús nos invita a recibir algo mas profundo, algo que no solo sostiene al cuerpo, pero al espíritu también. De la misma manera, si queremos vivir con mas profundidad, debemos estar listos para adaptar e interaccionar con los demás. A escuchar lo que el Espíritu nos dice a medida que avancemos.

But this is not easy work. We as humans and people of faith are not built to do this work alone. We need each other’s support. Even as Paul writes to the Ephesians of “speaking the truth in love,” he also mentions “bearing with one another in love” and again the “body’s growth in building itself up in love.” We must not only share the truth together, but we must also exercise patience with each other and build each other up every chance we get. We need each other to grow stronger in Christ, and by helping each other we build up the body of Christ in the world. This is vital work, and it is joyful work.

Esto no es fácil. Como seres humanos, y personas de fe, no hacemos esto a solas. Necesitamos el apoyo el uno del otro. Cuando San Pablo escribe a los Efesios, escribe sobre profesar la verdad en el amor, y también de y “soport[arse] unos a otros con amor”. Y concluye esta sección, diciendo: “Y por Cristo el cuerpo entero se ajusta y se liga bien mediante la unión entre sí de todas sus partes; y cuando cada parte funciona bien, todo va creciendo y edificándose en amor.” Edificándose en amor- esto es clave. Necesitamos hacer esto cada vez que podamos. No solo contar la verdad, pero también apoyarnos el uno al otro. Cuando hacemos esto, el cuerpo de Cristo será edificado en este mundo. Esto es un trabajo vital pero también gozoso.

So let us be unafraid to speak the truth in love! Always doing so with an eye for how to best support our neighbor. And let us be open to the words that the Spirit speaks through others, even as I pray for our wisdom as we process feedback. Thus, we will be strengthened and nourished for the journey of faith, and will grow into stronger Christians. The hard news is that we are human and that we will make mistakes again. But the good news is that there is nothing that will separate us from the love of God. Just as David fell short, we may do so as well. But we can come back to God and each other, and try again, and until we find our perfection and Shalom in the presence of God.

Así que no tengamos miedo de profesar la verdad en el amor. Pero que también nos soportaremos el uno al otro en el amor. Que estemos abiertos a la corrección que podamos recibir en el Espíritu a través de los demás, aun mientras recordemos que siempre diferenciamos entre lo que es nuestro trabajo en el Espíritu y lo que se trata del trabajo en el Espíritu de los demás. Así estaremos nutridos para esta jornada de fe. Y llegaremos hasta la madurez de Cristo. Lo difícil es que, como seres humanos, haremos más errores. Pero la buena noticia es que no hay nada que nos puede separar del amor de Dios en Cristo. Así que, justo como David hizo un error, pero se arrepintió y regresó a Dios, también nosotros podemos regresar a Dios, y hacer algo diferente, una y otra vez, hasta que encontremos nuestra perfección y Shalom en la presencia de Dios.
