All Santos + 11.2.14

(Rev. 7:9-17; Ps. /S. 34:1-10, 22; 1 Jn 3:1-3; Mat. 5:1-12)

Imaginen el escenario conmigo. Imagine the scene with me. Before you a vision: a multitude of people from God’s whole rainbow; from every nation, ethnic group, ability group and gender group. They are jubilant, all washed in the blood of the Lamb, all clothed in the white garment of the faithful. Hay una multitud de gente—de cada pueblo, nación y de cada grupo de habilidad y cada grupo sexual.  Algunos tienen tatuajes. Some have piercings. Pero están todos vestidos de blanco para mostrar su fidelidad al mismo Señor. Slowly, the throng begins to sing, quietly at first and building in intensity. They proclaim, “Salvation belongs to the Lord!” Empezando quieto, su canción se convierte en un grito triunfante: “¡La salvación se debe a Nuestro Dios!”

Interestingly, the passage right before this one in Revelation is the blessing of the Twelve Tribes of Israel. Justo antes de este pasaje vemos la bendición de las 12 tribus de Israel. Because they are mentioned right before this, you might associate the gathering of the TwelveTribes with this group. But reading closer, you begin to see God’s wider vision of a people in this picture. Vea que no solamente son los judíos, pero son de todos los grupos del mundo. The people of God are no longer now just the chosen people, but they include people of every stripe and background.
So this is us, folks! Esta es una representación de nosotros— ¡quienes vamos a ser con la ayuda de Dios! With God’s help, we will all be a part of this heavenly chorus of praise. And our loved ones are already in the choir. Y nuestros seres queridos están en el coro, esperándonos para cuando es nuestro tiempo.

But you might say to me, “those are all the saints. We are not them. We are not perfect. Our garments are not that shining white.” Es posible que me digan “Nosotros no somos tan santos.”
But notice this. They have been through ordeals. Ellos han sufrido por momentos difíciles. Por gran tribulación. They have been through trials. And we do, too. We suffer things that we don’t understand, grief and persecution that are beyond our comprehension. Hay cosas que pasan que no entendemos. We don’t have to be perfect to be among the saints. No tenemos que estar perfectos para estar entre los santos. De hecho, muchas veces es en pasar por sufrimiento que nos acercamos al Señor. In fact, it is often in suffering that we draw closer to God.

Tomen por ejemplo el Salmo de hoy, Salmo 34. Take today’s psalm, Psalm 34. It was written by the honored King David, yes. But at a time when he was on the run and pretending to be insane. Si, lo escucharon bien. David escribió esto cuando estaba huyendo de Saúl y buscando refugio con el Rey Achis de Gath. So the story is that David is on the run from Saul, and he seeks refuge from King Achish of Gath. But then someone notices that he’s a warrior, and not wanting a fight, he pretends to be mad. Cuando se den cuenta de que él es un guerrero famoso, el decida pretender que es loco. And he plays the part so well he even drools. So he gets away without trouble. El hasta babea, y lo dejen salir sin problema.[1]
So this is the context of this Psalm, of these beautiful words about God really being there for us: “The Lord redeems the life of his servants; none of those who take refuge in Him will be condemned (vs. 22).”  

“El Señor redime la vida de sus siervos, y no serán condenados los que en él confían” (v. 22).

Que interesante que este es el contexto, ¿no? Pero para mí es un alivio. It’s a relief, in a way. Because we are all sinners trying to be saints. We all have rough patches, even and especially King David. And yet what is important is that we strive to follow God. Lo importante es que tratamos de seguir a Dios. No tenemos que ser perfectos.

We are not All Saints because we are perfect. No somos Todos los Santos porque somos perfectos. Somos Todos los Santos porque fuimos hechos en la imagen de Dios y luchamos para seguir el camino de Jesús. We are All Saints because we were made in God’s image and we strive to follow the way of Jesus.

Another way of saying this is that we are children of God by grace. Somos también los hijos de Dios por la gracia de Dios. Y en el domingo de Todos los Santos, este es el tiempo en que recordamos que nosotros tenemos que amarnos como los hijos de Dios que somos. On this All Saints Sunday we remember that we are the children of God and we must love each other as the brothers and sisters that we are in Christ. Sabemos y confiamos que somos precedidos por los santos que han vivido antes que nosotros, uno que celebramos ayer. One Saint we celebrated yesterday, Glenn Brown, reminded us of the whole community of saints who have preceded us and who will lead the way for us.

Pero también recordamos que estamos familia en Cristo de otras maneras. En como actuamos. We also remember that we are a family in Christ in other ways. One member in our congregation suffered a devastating loss this week. And so a group of us came together to pray, not just for the family affected, but for the unity of the whole church family. En el estudio bíblico el jueves unimos para orar para un miembro de la congregación que sufrió una gran pérdida esta semana. Pero también oremos por la unidad de la familia que es nuestra parroquia. 
Which brings me to the Beatitudes, the gospel for today. Muchas veces llamamos esta parte del evangelio “Las bienaventuranzas.” Pero ¿qué significa esto? What is this blessing part of the gospel? Surely many of the things described, and I focused on the grief part this week, are not happy or blessed states? ¿Seguramente no estamos felices cuando estamos en dolor, en luto?  I think maybe Jesus isn’t saying these are all states that are good in and of themselves, at least with the first parts. But they are good in that we know that God will bring a blessing. Son buenos de esta manera: en el fin, vamos a recibir una bendición.

Esta semana escuché un podcast sobre la felicidad en que el Rabino Jonathan Sacks, un líder judío bien importante en Inglaterra, dijo algo bien interesante sobre la felicidad. Tocando el tema de que no puede desconectar la felicidad del sufrimiento que es parte de la vida humana, él dijo algo de la escritura en Génesis donde Jacob se lucha con el ángel. Es una noche en que queda solo Jacob en el desierto, y viene el ángel, y lucha con el hasta la madrugada. Pero Jacob no quiere soltar el ángel. Él dice al ángel, “Si no me bendices, no te soltaré” (Génesis 32:26b). Y de esto dice Rabino Sacks, es muy profundo porque es como nosotros como personas de fe tenemos que tratar con Dios cuando enfrentemos tribulaciones y dificultades. Decimos a Dios, “si no me bendices, no te soltaré.” Y no soltamos a Dios—no dejemos a Dios en paz hasta que Dios nos muestra la bendición que nos quiere compartir en esta situación.

So this week I listened to a podcast about happiness, and in it former chief Rabbi of England, Rabbi Jonathan Sacks, said something fascinating about happiness. The point came up that you can rarely separate happiness from suffering, as both are such a part of the human experience. And Rabbi Sacks brought up the Biblical story of Jacob wrestling with the angel in the book of Genesis. He said:  “The definition of a Jew, Israel is at it says in Genesis 34, one who struggles, wrestles, with God and with humanity and prevails. And Jacob says something very profound to the angel. "I will not let you go until you bless me." And that is how I feel about suffering. When something bad happens, I will not let go of that bad thing until I have discovered the blessing that lies within it.”[2]

We are blessed. Because we are people of God, and we trust in God’s ability to love his children and care for each of his children. Somos bienaventurados porque confiamos en que Dios ame a sus hijos y nos cuida de la manera especial que cada uno necesite.

We are blessed because we have each other, this special community of faith that can care for each other as true brothers and sisters in Christ. Estamos benditos porque tenemos uno al otro, una comunidad de fe que es especial por la manera en que queremos uno al otro como hermanos en Cristo.

Thanks be to God! Demos Gracias a Dios! We are that multitude, and we will weather the storms, as the saints before us have done. Somos los que van a pasar por la tribulación y estar lavados en la sangre de Cristo, como hicieron nuestros antepasados. And then we will all sing together—Salvation belongs to the Lord!    ¡La salvación se debe a Nuestro Dios!
