Ustedes no saben de dónde ha salido, y en cambio a mí me ha dado la vista. Bien sabemos que Dios no escucha a los pecadores; solamente escucha a los que lo adoran y hacen su voluntad. Nunca se ha oído decir de nadie que diera la vista a una persona que nació ciega. Si este hombre no viniera de Dios, no podría hacer nada. When I moved to Oxnard from Riverside, I realized how much I needed to be close to water. Seeing the ocean, it was like my senses re-hydrated. As much as I loved the beauty and the colors of the desert, something deep in my spirit yearned for water. Water in the desert is a symbol of life. So when Jesus approaches this Samaritan woman at Jacob’s well, and asks her for water, he is not just asking for a simple drink. He is asking for life. Something life-sustaining. And the location is not just a well, but it is a well dug out by an ancestor, Jacob, in the middle of an unforgiving desert. It is a reminder of God sustaining life, just like he did for the Israelites in the desert, for the people of Israel and for their not-so-close spiritual cousins, the Samaritans. Cuando mud é de Riverside a Oxnard, me di cuenta de cuanto necesitaba estar cerca del agua. Al ver el mar, fue como si mis sentidos fueran re-hidratados. Tanto que amaba la belleza y los colores del desierto, algo muy profundo en mi espíritu anhelaba para agua. Agua en el desierto es un símbolo para la vida. Water in the desert is a symbol of life. Así que, cuando Jesús pide agua de esta mujer samaritana en el pozo de Jacob, el no solo le pide una bebida. Le pide la vida. Algo que le de la vida. Y esta locación no solo es un pozo, pero es un pozo cavado por el antepasado Jacob en el medio de un desierto desolado. Es un recuerdo de que Dios sostenga a la vida, justo como lo hizo con los Israelitas en el desierto. Y para sus primos no tan cercanos, los Samaritanos. Por no sé si sabía...

We know the story of Adam and Eve, and of Jesus in the desert, a good reminder that today is the first Sunday of Lent, and that yes, we were meaning to follow this Lenten discipline, or that. We think we know them, but often times, if you are like me, you think often of all the cultural baggage we have mounted up around them. Is sin and death Eve’s fault? How about Adam? Is this the original male versus female? And good for Jesus, encountering temptation and winning at it, but I know I won’t do so well. I’m only human, after all. Only human. Son historia que casi sabemos de memoria, casi sin tener que abrir la Biblia los conocemos. We know these scriptures well, of Adam and Eve and Jesus in the desert. Conocemos bien la historia de Adán y Eva,  y de Jesús en el desierto, y sabemos porque lo leemos que hoy es el primer domingo de Cuaresma. Y recordemos que sí, ¡íbamos a tener una disciplina para Cuaresma! Creemos que si conocemos las escrituras, pero muchas veces, si son como yo, piensas en todas las partes culturales que hemos añadido a ellos. ¿Es verdad que el pecado y la muerte son la culpa de Eva? ¿Que pasa con Adán? ¿Esto se trata de hombres en contra de mujeres?
