Which
one of you should be voted off the island?
¿Quién debe ser botado de la isla?
This
was a real-life question at a political debate this week. Está fue una pregunta real en un debate

And
I liked one of the responses. One person said, hey that's not a respectful
question. Una

They
were all there to debate and should be treated respectfully. Por estar ahí deben estar respetados.
But that's the trouble, isn't it? Respect? Yo creo que

I
read an article this week about how the US may be headed into a religious civil
war. Un

And
I can see it. People trot out Jesus like he is their own pet symbol. Jesús se convierte en un símbolo para
cualquier lado político. Here is white
looking Jesus on the American flag. Here is another depiction of Jesus. Some,
like “black Jesus” can be empowering to different groups, but some can be
twisted to undergird traditional power roles within society. A veces las maneras en que todos reclamamos

opresión, pero a veces refuerzan a los que están en poder y no recuerdan que Jesús

the poor and the oppressed.
And
as such, today's gospel reminds us that Jesus isn't that easily pigeon-holed.
Jesus no juegue ese juego. He isn't playing that game.
Jesus
has just made everyone very uncomfortable because this gospel comes on the
heels of his cleaning out the temple, amongst other things.
Están todos muy incómodos porque Jesús acaba de

That
is why they ask him what he is up to, and who gave him the authority to mess
with the temple or heal!

We
know that he does but they don't know. He
has all the authority through God. Ellos no saben aunque nosotros sabemos que él tiene la

meantime, he is asked the question, and he can tell that they are not willing
to engage him for real. No quieren hablar con él de una manera verdadera.
And it makes me think of the passage from Philippians.

hablar honestamente el uno con el otro. It is also about honest engagement and
respect.
I
read this week that the section about thinking of others as better than us is
better read: “Each of you not considering your own interests but also the
interests of each of the others.”*

Filipenses es: "cada uno no considerando sus propios intereses solamente
pero también los de los demás."*
I
like this, because it reminds us that we are not better or less than others but
that, as we described at the Welcome Table this week, we must truly love
ourselves and truly love others. A veces no nos amamos bien a nosotros mismos. Así que nos tenemos que
amar bien para poder amar a los demás.
How
do we do this? I love a concept that my friend Diana Glyer uses, although she
did not come up with it, called Intellectual Hospitality. Yo estoy inspirada
por la hospitalidad intelectual. This is a concept in which those who have
different backgrounds and wildly different opinions come together to try to
connect at a table of sorts. Es el concepto de conectarnos en una mesa, no a pesar de nuestras diferencias,
pero celebrando nuestra diversidad. **
What
better place to connect like this than in an intentionally intercultural and
bilingual church? ¿Qué mejor manera de conectar así que en una iglesia que
intencionalmente forma comunidad entre culturas e idiomas? We connect at this table and find points of connection but also
respect for others’ different experiences and opinions. Conectamos en esta mesa de comunión, pero
también conectamos en el salón parroquial, compartiendo de nuestras
experiencias diferentes, encontrando tanto algo en común como respeto para la
experiencia diferente del otro.
We
must learn to value the right of others to their own opinions just as we treasure
our own ideas. Tenemos que aprender a valorar el derecho de los demás de tener sus
propias opiniones aun si no están nuestras mismas ideas. I think this kind of valuing of others in
community allows us to better support one another. Este tipo de respeto mutuo nos ayuda a cuidarnos

I
was inspired this week to hear of a concept in Australian Aboriginal thought, from
scholar Tyson Yunkaporta, which says
that communities of faith seek
to build a “social contract of reciprocity”—one “which allows people to build a
reputation of generosity based on sharing to ensure ongoing connectedness and
support.” Este concepto de la gente indígena

conexión y apoyo mutuo. *** Connectedness and mutual support- that is what we
are about! It combats the narcissism of popular society and shows a new way of

possible with God’s help, we live out mutual support not as a side benefit but
as one of the central goals of our church community.
And that, with Jesus’s help, will help us
model the way to get closer to the Kingdom! ¡Con
