Lent 3 B + Un poco loco + 3.3.24

Así va una canción en Coco. A Little crazy – this is a refrain from a song in the movie “Coco” (by Pixar) we often watch on el dia de los Muertos, All Souls Day.  In this movie we hear how family and love can make us a little crazy. En esta canción escuchamos sobre como la familia y el amor nos hacen un poco loco.
There is a long tradition in various cultures of the “crazy one” or the fool, the jester, who can do something outlandish that speaks to those in power and humbles them, reminds them what is most important. Hay una larga tradición en varias culturas de tener una persona loca, el tonto, o el bufón, quien habla la verdad y a veces hace cosas un poco locas para mostrar la verdad y mantener humilde a los que están en poder.

Hoy escuchamos de Pablo citando las Escrituras: «Haré que los sabios pierdan su sabiduría y que desaparezca la inteligencia de los inteligentes.» Paul says: “The message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.” El mensaje de la cruz parece tontería, locura, pero sabemos que en ella hay la salvación. We know that although, as we discussed last week, Jesus’ passion and death sound like bad news, they lead to good news indeed. What seems like foolishness leads to salvation. “El mensaje de la muerte de Cristo en la cruz parece una tontería a los que van a la perdición; pero este mensaje es poder de Dios para los que vamos a la salvación.”

What if we were to see Jesus’ action in the temple- the turning over of tables and cleansing of the temple, as a performative act? What if Jesus is being a holy fool in this scripture- challenging the powerful with a symbolic action to get them to think about what is true and what is right? Tal vez la acción de Jesús aquí en el templo es una acción performativa que ayudara a las autoridades en el templo a realmente pensar en lo que es correcto. Y de esta forma él está siendo un santo loco. He is being a holy fool here.

Because at one level his action doesn’t make sense. These money changers and sellers facilitated the process for purchasing animal sacrifices in the temple and performing a religious obligation. Estos cambiadores de monedas y vendedores de sacrificios animales estaban haciendo un servicio en el templo, ayudando a la gente a cumplir con los requisitos religiosos.
Even Jesus’ parents fulfilled the same relgious obligations. Aun los padres de Jesús cumplieron con las observancias religiosas en el templo. And in fact, these are the same obligations that begin with the commandments we read this morning- a continuation of the foundation of our Judeo-Christian faith. Estos fueron una continuación de los diez mandamientos que leemos hoy – parte de la fundación de nuestra fe.

 But there was a problem. God’s people were being exploited, by the same people who were supposed to help them meet their religious obligations. La gente de Dios estaba siendo explotados por los vendedores, y esto fue un problema grande. As such, what began as a helpful service had become blasphemy. And Jesus’ symbolic action draws attention to this truth. Y la acción de Jesús muestra esta verdad a las autoridades del templo y del pueblo. What’s more, God is calling people in Jesus into a new kind of sacrifice- that of a penitent heart turned to God, and a cessation of blood sacrifice. Dios no quiere la muerte, como dice la canción de la Cuaresma, sino que viva. God doesn’t want death, but renewed life.

So I ask you- when have you seen injustice? ¿Cuándo han visto ustedes la injusticia? Han hecho algo para responder? Were you able to do something about it? If so, that was really brave- bravo! If not, without judgment, can you identify why? There may be real reasons why, but it is good to acknowledge them. Si han hecho algo para abogar cuando ha habido una injusticia, bravo- te felicito- esto fue muy valiente. SI no, no tenga pena porque puede haber muchas razones por las que no pudo responder.

After all, this is dangerous stuff. Some commentators point out that while in the synoptic gospels, this moment happens later, closer to Jesus’ passion and death, in John this interaction happens earlier. In a way, said one friend, it makes all of the Gospel of John a passion story. Esto es peligroso – estas acciones de Jesús tienen una conexión directo con su pasión y su muerte. Y esta conexión viene mas temprano en el evangelio de San Juan, haciendo de una forma todo el evangelio la historia de la Pasión de Jesucristo.

Jesus’ actions have major consequences, ones that lead to his passion and death. No wonder we consider those who are willing to take such actions to be holy fools. No ha de sorprender que pensamos en las personas que tomen acciones, así como santos tontos. O un poco loco.

And yet, as Christians, we are called to be fools for Christ. Sin embargo, como cristianos, estamos llamados a ser un poco loco para Cristo. Now this may start small. How can we be fools for Christ in small ways this week? Tal vez esto sea algo pequeño. Sending a letter to a congressperson even if you don’t know if it will have an effect, or having a conversation with someone with whom you disagree, and trying to keep it civil, even if there’s little to no hope of agreement. Tal vez puede mandar una carta a un miembro del gobierno aun si no tendrá efecto visible, o tener una plática con alguien con quien no estás de acuerdo aun si no estás seguro si pueden encontrar un acuerdo. The good news here is there is a freedom and joy in this too. When we are fools for Christ, we are not as tethered to the expectations of the world, but free to follow the Spirit’s guidance, within parameters. I imagine Jesus smiling as he turns the tables, not only scowling, but joyfully and annoyedly telling the temple authorities what’s what. Yo imagino que Jesús no solo estaba enfadado aquí, pero tal vez hubo un poco de gozo en confrontar lo que vio como una inequidad. ¿Quién sabe? Who knows? It is possible.
