I was doing so as a part of the clergy-police council and as a way to show neighborly support. I did this not because I believe that the police are perfect but because I believe that community engagement with the police helps the police be stronger and better. But I did not expect to tear up a bit when I saw a particularly moving tradition. At the end of the program, a rider-less horse was processed down the length of the police officers, all standing at salute. This horse symbolized all the members of law enforcement who have been lost over the years and somehow seeing that horse without its rider was quite moving.
