Maybe we want to do more exercise or a project or graduate from a school program and we sit down to make those plans around now, when the year feels fresh. And these goals are good ones. But I would like to say that none of these goals matters if we don’t focus on who we serve. When you think about your goals for the next year, do you focus on serving God? Do you think of this question: in whose name do you serve? Because we are called to serve in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. And today, in addition to the New Year’s Day of the calendar, we celebrate not just when Jesus was given a name and circumcised, since Mary and Joseph were good Jews; but we also celebrate the day on which we remember in whose name we live. Hoy día muchos de nosotros pensamos en cómo queremos vivir para el año entrante. A veces queremos hacer más ejercicio o hacer un proyecto o graduar de un programa de escuela y este es el momento cuando hacemos estos tipos de planes para el año nuevo. Y estas metas son buenas. Pero me gustaría decir que ninguna de estas importa si no piensan en quien sirve. Cuando piensa en las metas que tiene Ud., ¿piensa en servir a Dios? ¿En el nombre de quien vive? Nosotros como cristianos estamos llamados a servir en el nombre de nuestro Señor Jesucristo. Hoy día celebramos la fiesta del Santo Nombre, y no solo es un día en que dieron nombre y circuncidaron a Jesús como los buenos judíos que fueron María y José, pero también es el día en que recordamos en el nombre de quien vivimos. (Christina Rossetti) Love came down at Christmas. Let us remember that it was love that was born on this day, so many years ago. So in that spirit, I am going to tell you about a shirt I saw this week. The shirt said, “Is it too late to be nice?” J And of course it was a joke. But I think it spoke of a real truth that many of us feel, this time of year and all year. Is it too late to be nice? We feel that even when we are adults and are no longer worried if we were good enough to get a gift this year. Love came down at Christmas, but do we deserve that love, that salvation? Have we been good enough? But Jesus says: it is not too late, it is never too late to receive my love. And besides, it is not about what we do. We cannot earn God’s love. It is freel

When I exclaimed at her having a special metallic “Sharpie” with which to sign her CDs, she said, “This isn’t my first rodeo!” And that struck me. This week, we had election news that shocked some of us, and perhaps not so much for others of us. Some of my friends have been completely rocked to the core by this result. But I turn to this week’s scriptures to remind myself that this is not God’s first rodeo. In today’s collect, or prayer of the day, we heard that we read scripture because it helps to give us strength for the hard and confusing moments of our lives. It helps us maintain hope and faith. For some, those hard and confusing moments came on Tuesday night, but for others a
