  A Life that Really is Life Pentecost 16C, 1 Timothy 6, Luke 16 St Paul’s Emmanuel, Santa Paula and All Saints, Oxnard The Rev. Alene Campbell-Langdell               If you feel that Jesus has been talking a lot about money the last few weeks, you are right.   Starting with Luke chapter 15, Jesus has told parable after parable about those who are rich or well off.   People who have inheritances to pass on to their children.   A farmer who owns a hundred sheep, and a business man who hires and fires managers at will.   And today’s gospel starts off yet again with, “There was a rich man…”   At which point, part of my brain tunes out.   I have been conditioned by the fantasies of American wealth to think of Jeff Bezos or Elon Musk, Bill Gates and Warren Buffett when I think about riches. (And yes, it is an interesting commentary on society that all the names are those of men.)    I don’t consider myself rich, and so, a part of me feels that this parable is not about me.   Or is i

Empezando con el capítulo 15 del evangelio de San Lucas, Jesús ha contado varias parábolas sobre los ricos. Las personas que tienen herencias para pasar a sus hijos, personas con cien ovejas, y un hombre de negocios quien emplea y despide de sus mayordomos según sus sentimientos del día. Y el evangelio de hoy empieza de nuevo con “Había un hombre rico…” tras lo cual parte de mi mente se desconecta. It was a wonderful time in which their friends, family and some from the parish were able to come and help them celebrate 36 years! There was much rejoicing! But this past Thursday a group of folks from Oxnard and Ventura met to plan an event, one that is less happy in nature but still important. Every December, around the longest night of the year, people gather to mark those who have died in the past year who are homeless. We will do this again in Oxnard on Sunday December 18 th at 3:30pm in Plaza Park. This is important, because many of those involved did not have special memorial services or family members and friends to honor th

Pero el jueves pasado un grupo de gente de Oxnard y Ventura se reunió para planear un evento, uno que es menos feliz por naturaleza, pero aún importante. The gospel today is full of strict pronouncements like the above, including not only how we must give up possessions, but also be willing to give up family relationships for the sake of the gospel. Does Jesus mean what he is saying here? Yes. And, as we discussed in evening prayer this week, Jesus’ statements are meant to be taken in a broader context. The context of God’s love. Jesus is firm in his commands to us but even firmer in showing us about God’s love. A bit later today, I am officiating at a betrothal ceremony for a very special couple.
