Ayer, hace muchos años, en el pequeño
pueblo de Dolores en México, un sacerdote dio un grito a la gente indígena. Dijo:
“Mis hijos… una nueva dispensación viene a nosotros hoy en día ¿La
recibirán? ¿Se liberarán a sí mismos? ¿Recuperarán las tierras robadas por
trescientos años de sus antepasados por los españoles odiados?”[1]
Yesterday many years
hence in 1810 in a small town named Dolores in Mexico, a priest named Miguel
Hidalgo y Costilla said to the indigenous people: “My Children, a new
dispensation comes to us today…Will you free yourselves? Will you recover the
lands stolen 300 years ago from your forefathers by the hated Spaniards? We
must act at once.”[2]
And thus began the Mexican independence movement. In just a little while horses
and trumpets and swirling dancers will appear out this door to remind us of
that fateful day. El desfile de hoy nos hace recordar de aquel día
memorable.
Hidalgo y Costilla claimed for the people of Mexico freedom
from religious and political tyranny. The Spanish government would not embrace
the Guadalupe and were oppressing the indigenous Mexicans. Lo
que Hidalgo y Costilla quisiera fue libertad para la gente de México, no solo
en términos políticos pero en su religión. Los españoles habían rechazado la
Virgen de Guadalupe, y conocemos su importancia.
La libertad está muy
importante. Freedom is
important! And today, we see the importance of freedom in the passage from
Exodus. The Israelites are freed from the oppression of being slaves in Egypt. En
el libro de Éxodo los israelitas están liberados de la esclavitud en Egipto.
Pero no es tan simple. There is a wrinkle here in the
typical triumphal tale- yes Israel is saved. But ordinary Egyptians are buried
in the mud, probably more of them than the commanders and Pharaoh’s leaders. Es
verdad que los israelitas están liberados, pero a un gran costo en vidas de los
egipcios. Y podemos suponer que no fueron tantos de los líderes de Egipto que

So yes freedom from religious or political tyranny is

o política está muy importante. But it can lead to damaging losses and trade-offs also, even

But I think God is also teaching us about something deeper
here; a kind of inner freedom. Se trata también de algo posiblemente
más importante- la libertad interior. And inner freedom happens when we

To see this, we look to the example of the gospel story.
Forgiveness is like … a functionary who is stuck in system of oppression. He owes
a ridiculous amount of money, more than he can pay in 150, 000 years –the point
here is his debt is huge. How did he get this debt? We don’t know. He and his
whole family is about to be enslaved. And the king wipes the slate clean. How?
We don’t know.
Jesús nos dice que el perdón
es como un funcionario quien está en un ciclo de opresión. Él debe más dinero
que el pudiera pagar en 150,000 años, es decir, su deuda es grandísimo. No
sabemos cómo incurrió una deuda tan grande. Él va a estar vendido a la esclavitud,
junto con toda su familia. Y el rey le perdona su deuda. Así de fácil. Pero él
no acepta este perdón en su corazón. Porque de allí él va a acercar otro compañero.
But then he approaches a colleague, and he is not touched by
this gesture at all. He wants to demand this smaller sum- equivalent to 100
days of labor or about a third of a year’s wages- not nothing. But nothing like
what he owed. Perhaps because it is smaller he didn’t even see it in the same
category? We don’t know. But his heart is closed. And he throws him in jail.
Which is counter-productive to letting him work and pay off the debt. And this
doesn’t just affect these two – it affects all in the picture. And so he is
made to pay off his debt by suffering.
Cuando él acerca a su compañero,
aunque él le debe tanto menos, o posiblemente porque, él no vea las deudas de
la misma manera, no sabemos, el no comparte la misma compasión y hasta lo manda
al cárcel para pagar. Que no hace mucho sentido. ¿Cómo va a ganar dinero en la cárcel?

The man here is free of outside debts but not free on the inside. Este hombre está libre de deudas al inicio pero no está libre porque no tiene perdón y compasión en su corazón. We know that inner freedom is what God is teaching us about here.

Forgiveness means we can move beyond whatever someone or some
institution has done. El perdón significa que podemos ir
mas allá de lo que nos ha hecho una institución o un sistema.
It doesn’t mean it was all OK. Esto no
significa que decimos que un mal que ha sido hecho estaba bien. Por ejemplo, la
gente en St. Louis tiene que escuchar que ellos tienen derecho a estar seguros.
For example, the people
of St. Louis have a right to hear that what was done was wrong and that all of
their inhabitants can be safe. Oppression, abuse and all such wrongs are still
wrong. La opresión y cualquier tipo de abuso están mal.

bautizos hoy. Y hay poder en nuestro bautismo y en el perdón que trae. We celebrate some baptisms today. And
there is power in our baptism and in the forgiveness it brings.
Because when we are baptized we are forgiven. And then we can
forgive.
And when we forgive we can be free of the enslaving grip of bitterness. Porque cuando estamos bautizados, estamos perdonados. Y cuando estamos perdonados, podemos perdonar y encontrar la libertad que hay en ese perdón. Notice that the slave remains a slave. Noten que este funcionario continúe ser un esclavo. If he had accepted debt forgiveness and forgiven another, he would have had his freedom. Si él hubiera perdonado a su compañero, el también hubiera tenido su libertad.
And when we forgive we can be free of the enslaving grip of bitterness. Porque cuando estamos bautizados, estamos perdonados. So too we must all strive to be free. Así
que hoy, que lucharemos todos para la libertad. Not just as a people in general but internally. Para
la libertad interior tanto como para la libertad como un pueblo. Cuando tenemos libertad interior, la libertad
de opresión se hace posible para todos. Only after inner freedom is gained can we truly see an end to
all forms of oppression and the beginning of freedom for all God’s people. God
gives us the strength. Dios nos da la fortaleza. May it be
