  Why do you Search for the Living Among the Dead? Advent 1A, 2022 (Isaiah 2, Matthew 24) All Santos, Oxnard The Rev. Alene Campbell-Langdell with The Rev. Melissa Campbell-Langdell   This sermon borrows heavily from another sermon for today from Pastor Alene, with adaptations to our Sunday service context. In his popular translation of verses 26-28, a few verses prior to our Gospel reading for today, Eugene Peterson has Jesus say, So if they say, ‘Run to the country and see him arrive!’ or, ‘Quick, get downtown, see him come!’ don’t give them the time of day.   The Arrival of the Son of Man isn’t something you go to see.   He comes like swift lightning to you!   Whenever you see crowds gathering, think of carrion vultures circling, moving in, hovering over a rotten carcass.   You can be quite sure that it’s not the living Son of Man pulling in those crowds. Today is traditionally known as Christ the King Sunday, and the last Sunday in ordinary church time, as next week we plunge into Advent! Growing up, I had a certain idea about the monarchy. My mother admonished me to cut my food properly, because I never knew when I might be invited to take tea with the queen! I think this was a bit fanciful, but I complied just in case. And just a couple of months ago, we saw an outpouring of grief when Queen Elizabeth I died and people lined up for hours to honor her. For many this was the first time they got close to the monarch, although many of us British subjects have seen her at a distance from time to time.   Malachi 4, 2 Thessalonians 3, Luke 21 St Paul’s, Ventura/ All Saints Oxnard The Rev. Alene Campbell-Langdell               Jesus’ disciples asked him, “Teacher, when will this be, and what will be the sign that this [destruction] is about to take place?” (Luke 21:7).   Yes, Jesus, please tell us!   I’d like to get it on my calendar.   Because if I just knew when the next disaster was going to happen, I’d make sure to get my vacation in first!   Ray Brown in his Introduction to the New Testament proposes that this is what is happening with those idle believers in 2 nd Thessalonians.   After all, if there’s only a short time left before the end of the world, work seems a bit useless. [1]   Yet, instead of praising these Thessalonian believers for their practicality, the letter writer recommends discipline.   For his part, Jesus responds to the disciples’ question with advice about how to live through bad times rather than how to avoid them or even how to prepare for them.

Lucas/Luke 6:20–31) Karen Cushman’s book, Catherine, Called Birdy (1994), has been recently made into a movie on Netflix (Lena Dunham, 2022). The adaptation is problematic due to the scenes of abuse with her father, quite different than I what I recall from the book.
