Easter Vigil + Easter Homily Excerpt by St. Maximus of Turin + 3.31.18

(This excerpt from an Easter Sermon by Saint Maximus of Turin (Sermon 53, 1-2: CCL 23, 214-216) is used in the Roman Office of Readings for the fifth Sunday of Easter with the accompanying biblical reading of Revelation 18:21-19:10)

Christ is risen!   ¡Cristo esta resucitado! He has burst open the gates of hell and let the dead go free.

Él ha renovado la faz de la tierra por los miembros de la iglesia ya renacidos en el santo bautismo.

And Christ has made the earth blossom afresh with men [and women] brought back to life.

Su Espíritu Santo ha abierto las puertas del cielo, que están bien abiertos para recibir los que se suben de la tierra.

Because of Christ’s resurrection the thief ascends to paradise, the bodies of the blessed enter the holy city, and the dead are restored to the company of the living.

Hay un movimiento hacia arriba en toda la creación, mientras cada elemento se sube a algo más alto.

We see hell restoring its victims to the upper regions, earth sending its buried dead to heaven, and heaven presenting the new arrivals to the Lord.

En un movimiento singular, la Pasión de nuestro Salvador levanta a la gente de los abismos, les levanta de la tierra, y les pone en las alturas.

Christ is risen! Cristo esta resucitado! His rising brings life to the dead, forgiveness to sinners, and glory to the saints.

Y por esto David el profeta llama a toda la creación a juntarnos en celebrar la festival de la Pascua: Regocijémonos y seremos alegres, el grita, en este día que hizo el Señor.

The light of Christ is an endless day that knows no night.

Cristo es este día, dice el apóstol; y esto es el significado de sus palabras: La noche se termina; el día empieza ya.

He tells us that night is almost over, not that it is about to fall.

Por esto entendemos que la venida de la luz de Cristo pone en fuga la oscuridad de Satanás, y deja ningún lugar para cualquiera sombra del pecado.

His everlasting radiance dispels the dark clouds of the past and checks the hidden growth of vice.

El hijo es el día a quien el día, quien es el Padre, comunica el misterio de su divinidad.

He is the day who says through the mouth of Solomon: I have caused an unfailing light to rise in heaven.

Y como en el cielo ninguna noche puede seguir el día, así también ningún pecado puede ensombrecer la justicia de Cristo.

The celestial day is perpetually bright and shining with brilliant light; clouds can never darken its skies.

De la misma manera, la luz de Cristo luce eternamente con un brillo luminoso y nunca puede estar extinguido por la oscuridad del pecado.

This is why John the evangelist says: The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has never been able to overpower it.

Y por esto, mis hermanos [y hermanas], cada uno de nosotros seguramente debemos regocijar en esta [noche] santo.

And so, my brothers, each of us ought surely to rejoice on this holy day.

Let no one, conscious of his sinfulness, withdraw from our common celebration, nor let anyone be kept away from our public prayer by the burden of his guilt.

No dejamos que nadie, consciente de su pecado, se retira de nuestra celebración común, ni deja que nadie se aleja de nuestra oración pública por razón de su culpa.  

Sinner he may indeed be, but he must not despair of pardon on this day which is so highly privileged; for if a thief could receive the grace of paradise, how could a Christian be refused forgiveness?

Pecador puede ser por seguro, pero no debe desesperarse del perdón en este día que es de tan alto privilegio; por si un ladrón puede recibir la gracia del paraíso, ¿Cómo puede un cristiano ser rechazado en su búsqueda para el perdón?
