As we begin, let us hear from the First Nations version of this first part of Luke 11: (Luke 11 First Nations Version , verses 2-4) Creator Sets Free (Jesus) smiled and said to them, “When you send your voice to the Great Spirit, here is how you should pray: “O Great Spirit, our Father from above, your name is sacred and holy. “Bring your good road to us, where the beauty of your ways in the spirit-world above is reflected in the earth below. “Provide for us day by day—the elk, the buffalo, and the salmon. The corn, the squash, and the wild rice. All the good things we need for each day.   “Release us from the things we have done wrong in the same way we release others for the things done wrong to us. (Amos 8:11) There was a famine in the land. Not of food, although it could be scarce at times with these Roman occupiers, but of the Word of the Lord. Not that the people used those words for it, exactly. But they felt something gnawing at their center. Something that was not quite right. You see, so many religious leaders had gotten focused on the things of this world. They had become a little successful, in some cases by collaborating with Rome, and in other cases because the respect of the people often led to a comfortable lifestyle. They had a place in society.   Getting on God’s Good Side Proper 10C, Deuteronomy 30, Luke 10   St Paul’s Emmanuel, Santa Paula The Rev. Alene Campbell-Langdell   Today's Gospel lesson starts with a question to Jesus, “What must I do to inherit eternal life?”   Now, it’s possible the lawyer meant this question literally, but I don’t think that cryogenics or better health care is what this lawyer had in mind.   Instead, this question echoes Moses’ final speech to the Israelites in Deuteronomy.   Moses describes the fundamental choice that we all have: we can choose blessings or curses, life or death.   And so, in a sense, the lawyer asks Jesus, “How do I make sure that I’m always on the side of life?” How do I stay on the blessing side of things rather than the other?   How do I get on God’s good side?   This is a fundamental question for anyone who is not actually an atheist.   Because anyone who has even the slightest idea that God might exist has to wond...
