Fully Alive in God

The speaker came to us from another diocese, and she had a handout with a lot of questions. The questions that Jesus asked. And she led us through a meditative process of engaging these questions in faith communities. Pastor Alene has been using these questions as a sort of collaborative sermon every so often at St Paul’s Emmanuel, and they have been enjoying the experience. I felt inspired to try the technique today to see how we liked it. It means a lot less of me speaking, but a lot more of hearing from all of you. Campbell-Langdell All Santos, Oxnard (Jeremiah 8:18–9:1; Ps. 79:1–9; 1 Timothy 2:1–7; St. Luke 16:1–13)   “… So that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and dignity.” (from 1 Timothy 2:1-7) This section of today’s epistle brings to mind a scripture repeated among our Oxnard Police Interfaith Council meetings recently: “If it is possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all” (Romans 12:18). In today’s world, we have shocking reminders that living peaceably is only so much within our grasp when there are many forces of cynicism and nihilism in the world, especially infecting our young people. In addition, many Christians see themselves as victims rather than understanding their role in systems of oppression and the adverse effects of climate change, and thus are not taking adequate actions to respond because they feel they must first wage an inner spiritual war. Campbell-Langdell All Santos, Oxnard ( Jeremiah 4:11-12, 22-28; Psalm 14; 1 Timothy 1:12-17; Luke 15:1-10 ) The day after tomorrow, many years hence in 1810, in a small town named Dolores in Mexico, a priest named Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla said to the indigenous people: “My Children, a new dispensation comes to us today…Will you free yourselves? Will you recover the lands stolen 300 years ago from your forefathers by the hated Spaniards? We must act at once.” [1]  And thus began the Mexican independence movement. In most years, in just a little while, horses, trumpets, and swirling dancers will appear out of this door to remind us of that fateful day and Independence Days in various parts of Latin America. Sadly, those horses and dancers are quiet today, due to logistical difficulties, but the spirit of El Grito will be strong in Plaza Park today. Dijo: “ Mis hijos… una nueva dispensación viene a nosotros hoy en día. ¿La recibirán? ¿Se liberarán a sí mismos? ¿Recuperarán las tierras robadas por trescientos años de sus antepasados por los españoles odiados?” [1]  El desfile que normalmente pasa hoy nos hace recordar aquel día memorable y días semejantes en varias partes de América Latina. Aunque tristemente el desfile no ocurre hoy, sé que el espíritu del “Grito” estará presente en la Placita hoy.
