All Santos, Oxnard

(2 Kings 5:1-14; Psalm 30; Galatians 6:(1-6)7-16; Luke 10:1-11, 16-20)

¿Qué es especialmente valiente? What is especially brave? To put yourself out there with people you don’t know and share about something that truly matters, something like faith. It can make us feel afraid. Of rejection, an uncomfortable situation, sometimes danger.

This week I was worried about going to a prayer breakfast. Are you nuts? You might ask. But let me explain. With all the changes from the Supreme Court, I knew that some evangelical Christians perceive the national situation differently than I do, and I was concerned if I would be able to pray along with others on a week such as this one.

But I went. And it was interesting. They asked me to pray against fear in our world. Now you know it’s God’s sense of humor when that happens. God always knows. I don’t know why I am surprised. Posiblemente han vivido algo semejante. Tenían miedo de algo y Dios dice: he aquí, pruébatelo.
I am not going to lie. I could not “amen” everything said. For example, when a pastor mentioned the nuancing of gender roles as being a bad thing in society. I for one tend to think we all get healthier understanding gender in a more expansive way, even those of us who fall pretty narrowly into historically normal roles.

But we could pray about God being in the hearts of those dealing with addiction. We prayed for our leaders and for their wellbeing and for God’s guidance, and more. Turns out, we had some things we could all say “amen” to.

Now, if I, a pastor felt a bit unsure going to a prayer meeting, how did these seventy-two people feel we hear about in today’s gospel reading? They are sent out like lambs in the midst of wolves. If the world is unfriendly and divided now, it was worse then.

But Jesus sent them out. Jesus los mandó. Why did he send them? Because this message saves lives. And that is why they went. Into danger. Hopefully to receive hospitality. Perhaps to be rejected.

How does this translate to today? ¿Como traduzcamos esto al hoy en día?

I think we remember that the situation is no less urgent. People need to hear that God loves them. That God does not make mistakes. And that God wants everyone to live their own truth in fullness and experience abundant life. Too many people are despairing. We need to share the good news of grace and love in God.

A quick side note- this Good News is God’s love- so it must be received as and feel like good news. It must be shared in a gentle way that is open to engagement with the other’s experience.

And because our work is important, we must keep it simple, just like Jesus did. Go to a place. Offer peace (regardless of what you perceive at first- people will surprise you). Eat what is served, receive the hospitality offered without jockeying for a better situation. If you don’t feel the love, move on. Don’t hang on to second thoughts. Yes, the dust is a message to the rejector, but this seems to me more like the reason we forgive and try to let something go. So, we don’t carry even the dust on with us to the next moment. To the next opportunity to share God’s love.

Now, we are not all travelers. Sometimes we are the ones offering hospitality. ¿Como podemos ser hospitalarios también? I think of visitors that come to the church. Many folks might bring a new kind of good news to us, too, and we have to be open to it. What gifts does a person have to share? But first, we must welcome. We must make sure someone knows how to follow the worship. How do we find the hymns? Bring a book over opened to the right number. Tráiganlos el libro abierto al himno correcto.

Then, invite them to eat or fellowship! We usually have some form of coffee and/or snacks at any service. We must show we know how to feed body and soul, at least a bit!

If anyone comes who is just passing through, we bless them on their way. If anyone prefers to worship another way, we bless them on their way. And if any stay, praise God!

This is the Christian way. We rinse and repeat until we too are sent out again or again receive others.

In a world of division, of hearing a lack of hospitality between people, lets be people that give and receive hospitality.

Let us risk receiving and offering hospitality even when we are unsure. At the end of the prayer breakfast this week, the host thanked me for coming. I thanked the host and I made some connections. I will move forward with caution, and always be careful to keep it simple like Jesus did.

But I will keep connecting. Because Jesus planned to go to every place the seventy-two went. And Jesus is going ahead of me and behind me everywhere too in spirit. Porque Jesús camina a mi lado. Y esta en frente de mí, y detrás de mí. I am not afraid. I have a message to share. You also have a message of God’s love to share.
Do not be afraid. Go into the world, and find the ones who will peace you back!
