(John 6:56, 61).” There is something very scandalous about eating the flesh and blood of Jesus, even if it is “just” spiritual. Dr. Peter Carlson points out that in John, bodies and enfleshment are important. In embracing receiving Jesus’ body and blood in a spiritual form, our bodies are made holy too. And yet, getting overly literal about this passage does lead to a sort of spiritual cannibalism. Which can be, as the disciples say, a “difficult teaching.” Understatement of the century! And yet, where else can we go? As Peter says so eloquently, “Lord, to whom can we go? (John 5:68b).” Does this offend you? Many queer folks are used to giving offense from time to time. This week I led a funeral, supported Vacation Bible School, did a house blessing and baptized two people, and then finished with a quincea ñ era before preparing for today’s Sunday services. I was joking with Alene and Mabel that I just needed to do some wedding that a priest had to drop out on in the last minute, and I was doing almost everything a priest could do, in one week. Fortunately, that didn’t happen! Weeks like this one are fun, full, and sometimes just a tad stressful as I try to also do the necessary things, such as eating, praying, exercising, some time in the office to help those in need and sermon-writing. Esta semana tuve un funeral, apoyé a la escuela de vacaciones bíblicas, hice una bendición de casa, dos bautismos y una quinceañera. Solo hace falta una misa de matrimonio y he hecho casi todo lo que hace un sacerdote en su ministerio activo. Semanas como esta son divertidas, llenas y a veces un poco estresante mientras trato de hacer las otras cosas necesitadas, como comer, rezar, hacer ejercicio, tomar tiempo en la oficina para ayudar a la gente en necesidad, y escribir un sermón.
