Habla de la unidad cristiana. Pero esto no es fácil en nuestro mundo actual. ¿Verdad? ¿Lo sabemos cuando un amigo o una amiga entra en la iglesia y pregunta: ¿es una iglesia católica o cristiana? En nuestra iglesia, decimos sí. Porque somos los dos. Todos somos cristianos y el significado de la palabra “católica” es “universal.” Así que se refiere a la iglesia de todos los creyentes, no a una sola iglesia. Christian unity is a favorite topic for hymns and praise songs, but it is hard! With all the division in our world, it is hard indeed to find places of true Christian unity. I have now attended two meetings of the African American Church Council in our area, and I was impressed by how unity is their singular goal. Campbell-Langdell All Saints, Oxnard ( Acts 17:22-31 ; Psalm 66:7-18 ; 1 Peter 3:13-22 ; John 14:15-21 )   Today, our reading from the first epistle of Peter, Chapter 3, begins thus: “Now, who will harm you if you are eager to do what is good? But even if you do suffer for doing what is right, you are blessed. Do not fear what they fear, and do not be intimidated, but in your hearts sanctify Christ as Lord.” Well, this is a doozy of a passage. Of course, it has a good message, but it has also done harm. Over the years, too many folks have interpreted it as advocating for putting up with suffering because that means you are on the right track, which can be correct at times. But that has also led to telling folks that she should and will suffer in ways that we deem unjust. And folks who are vulnerable are most likely to suffer. Hoy, nuestra lectura de la primera epístola de San Pedro, capítulo 3, empieza así: “¿Quién podrá hacerles mal, si ustedes se empeñan siempre en hacer el bien? Pero aun si por actuar con rectitud han de sufrir, ¡dichosos ustedes! No tengan miedo a nadie, ni se asusten, sino honren a Cristo como Señor en sus corazones.” Pues esto es un pasaje muy lindo, pero también uno que ha hecho mucho daño.
