Blessed/Dichosos

All Saints Sunday/ Domingo de Todos los Santos, 2026

(Rev./Apoc. 7, Ps/S. 34, 1 San Juan/John 3, Mateo/Matthew 5)

When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying:

"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
"Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
"Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.

Good morning, everyone! ¡Buenos días! Today we celebrate All Saints Sunday, our special feast day. We also honor our dead, anticipate tomorrow’s feast of All Souls. This is a holy time of honoring our loved ones and those who are exemplars of our faith.

But first, what does Jesus mean in this passage from Matthew today? How could someone possibly be blessed who is poor, who has lost a loved one?

Well, in the ancient world, much as now, when things went well, when babies were born and illnesses cured leading to the long life of friends and family, when business was going well, they would say, “I am blessed.” Which made the people for whom things weren’t going well sometimes feel like God had abandoned them. This is fairly common for all of us. When things go sideways, we ask God, why?

And Jesus is trying to counter that narrative. He is saying hey there, if you lost your job, or if your child died, or your best friend, if you are struggling with addiction, or if money is tight, you are blessed! Not because of what is happening to you, but because those are the moments when God comes right up next to you and holds your hand. Even now, if you can believe it, Jesus is holding his hand out to you and saying, take a load off and hold my hand for a bit. We will get through this together.

Because being children of God doesn’t just mean that everything is going perfectly well all the time, but it can mean being faithful and knowing that God has got your back even when things go wrong.

See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God; and that is what we are. 1 John 3 tells us this today. And today we celebrate all the children of God. Hoy celebramos todos los hijos de Dios.

We celebrate the saints who went before and taught us how to live a Godly life. They didn’t have it all easy either. Saint Francis, whom Father Will mentioned a few weeks ago, suffered a lot and died young. But he lived with such joy, knowing he was following Jesus, and he made a huge impact on the whole church.

Speaking of the saints there are so many. Who is an inspiration to you? Do any come to mind? (Pause.) Of course, we have the Virgin Mary in the church in the form of the apparition of the Guadalupana. But I also think of the examples of St. Clare of Assisi, who at one point was gravely ill. She loved church so much that God projected a mass on the wall of her cell, making her the patron saint of TV and virtual reality. Or of St. Anthony of Egypt, who suffered so much, wrestling with demons in the desert, and who now is considered the patron saint of those living with mental illness. I love that Fr. Thomas Keating says in his Invitation to Love that Anthony was put through so many struggles as a way to grow. He likens his journey to that of a butterfly that needs to push its way out of the cocoon in order to be strong enough to fly.

But we don’t just celebrate the big saints today. We celebrate the ordinary ones, too. Our loved ones who have gone before. The anonymous saints known just to us. Like my Grandma Sybil who would sing out of Hymns Ancient and Modern as best she could, and always pushed a 50p coin into my brother’s and my hands, so we could have something to put in the offering.

And we celebrate our own saints of All Saints. Those who have gone before us and will lead the way home. People like Dave, whom we lost this year, who showed us how to be a good steward not only of money but also of the earth. Who in his last days was still giving me his opinion about the markets, faithful to the end to this role as trustee. Who I miss greatly but who told me not to show pity because he knew he was going to a better place. And so many others, Kailani, who we honored last week, and so many pillars of the congregation- Laurette, Haydee, Elisa, and so many more…

Today, as we honor them, we remember that even if life isn’t easy for us Christians, it is joyful.

Dave Matthews shared with me that his dad loved to sing “I sing a song of the saints of God” from the Hymnbook, but he would change the verse from “and I want to be one too” to “and I want a green balloon!”

Of course, it was a bit silly to sing “and I want a green balloon,” but it was fun. And goofy. And reminds us of an important message from the saints. We must not only be solemn, but we must learn to have fun as Christians.

We know that God will eventually dry every tear, as it tells us in Revelation today, but I like to think that some of our Christian tears are also tears of joy because we will have fun on the way to Glory, too.

As we prepare for our ingathering and celebrate this community together, and all our loved ones, let us hold all the feelings and honor them, and trust that, wherever we are on our journey, we are blessed!

Amen.
