(Exodus 20:1-4, 7-9, 12-20; Psalm 19; Philippians 3:4b-14; Matthew 21:33-46)

Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my
heart be acceptable in your sight, *
O Lord, my strength and my redeemer.

Amen.

Good morning, everyone/ buenos días a todos y todas!

Today’s gospel speaks to us of a vineyard, a powerful biblical symbolic image, with meaningful roots in the book of Isaiah.

We don’t have to stretch our imaginations too far to imagine this scene, surrounded as we are by fields and even some vineyards.
We see a contrast in the gospel passage between the care that God provides for the vineyard and the destructive actions of the tenants.

Here we hear a clear call to care for and tend to the land and to others, to give to God their due, and not to give into greed and rapacious tendencies.

In the church calendar, either yesterday or today are the traditional days for honoring Saint Francis of Assisi.

We lift him up as a great lover of animals, and he was, and because of him we bless the animals today. But there is so much more to his story.

When he was a young man feeling a call to a reformed life, he heard God tell him to “rebuild his church.” First, he took it very literally and rebuilt his local church. But then he realized that God was calling him to found an order that was not based on the trappings of wealth and power, but that would show the church how to reclaim poverty and simplicity as the ways to follow Jesus.

He was very connected to nature, and his ministry continues today via the Order of Saint Francis, something Father Will may share about with us shortly.

Today’s passages remind us not only to care for God’s church, but also to care for God’s creation, which includes God’s people.

In our Hebrew Scriptures Reading from today, we have the Ten Commandments. They are a basic blueprint for living an honorable life. But did you know that the call not to steal includes not stealing humans? It includes kidnapping.

We may think that this is obvious, but unfortunately some of us believe that people operating on behalf of our government have been removing people without due process from their families and communities. I wonder what God would have to say about that?

These sinful actions are why some of our Friends from Sacred Resistance and other interfaith companions are marching this week from Adelanto to LA to protest the actions of ICE and the conditions of the holding facilities.

Because our country is not showing mercy in how we are treating foreign nationals who have come here. There should indeed be an appropriate process for coming to the US, but compassion also plays a role. They began walking on Tuesday and will be walking until this Tuesday, over 96 miles to protest the actions of ICE in our communities.

This all brings me back to Francis, who had compassion for all creatures. He might, like Paul before his conversion, have said, I have it all together, what do I need with Jesus? But instead, he realized that in Jesus there is a different life, a more abundant life. Every trapping he had before was like rubbish says Paul, and we imagine Francis said something similar. Christ and living with him was so much better.

Paul’s description of the treasure of living in Christ gives me hope. Because we know that life in Jesus may entail sacrifice, but it is also about joy. With our beloved animals, we know that we are made for more than just surviving. That in Jesus, there is abundant life. We were made for more than living in the fear of scarcity. We were made to live without fear. We were made for abundance, and joy, the joy we celebrate with pets and other creatures today.
