Alene Campbell-Langdell All Santos, Oxnard Psalm 116, Luke 24:13-35 It was all anyone could talk about.  Every news channel covered it non-stop.  As the couple walked along together that evening, it was hard for them to talk of anything else.  All their plans and hopes for the future had been upended.  Uncertainty and questions were the new norm.  So, who was this stranger who suddenly walked beside them (ignoring all the social distancing rules)?  How could he not know what everyone was talking about?  And furthermore, how dare he bring a discussion of God into a tragedy this enormous? Where is God in the midst of suffering?  It’s one of the great mysteries of theology.  Is suffering God’s judgment?  Are those who are spared or healed somehow more righteous than those who are not?  How can suff...

When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit.” Reading this passage this week, I was drawn to the breath imagery. I remembered reading a couple of years back a book by Richard Rohr that discussed how our very breath – the act of breathing in and out- can be a powerful reminder that each breath we take is the Holy Spirit breathing life into us and inviting us into life. [1] And yet the breath imagery brought tears to my eyes as I thought of those across the world who struggle to breathe right now due to COVID-19. Breathe on us, Breath of God. Recordé lo que leí hace un par de años en un libro por Richard Rohr que describió como nuestra respiración – la acción de inhalar y de respirar para afuera – puede recordarnos que cada respiración que tomamos es un don de Dios y representa el Espíritu Santo respirando en y a través de nosotros. Sandaled feet walking over stony ground. So cold out, wrapping the cloak closer. But we have a duty to care for him, and more than that a love that bids us serve. We approach the tomb; it is empty. We feel shock, maybe a bit disturbed. Where have they taken him? Then later Jesus comes and… joy! Now we are with Peter and another disciple, hurrying to the tomb. Could this be true? It is still dark. The times are still dark. The tomb is empty. What could this mean? Does it mean he has risen?! The disciples hurry back, scared and amazed and full of inklings of joy. On this Easter morning, we awake to find a world that is still dark as the tomb. And yet Christ’s Easter light has broken through before, and we trust that it is doing so again. Sus pies en sandalias cruzan una tierra pedregosa. Hace frio afuera, y le envuelve un poco más en su chal. Pero tenemos un deber para cuidar a su cuerpo, y aún más, un amor que nos lleva a servir.
